My wife tutored kids in the local library but that was not working well because a room was not always available. Also, she could only have two kids at once maximum in the library.

So, she decided to lease a property and open a tutoring center. I was initially against the idea because I only thought about 1 on 1 tutoring. However, she is smarter than me and had a master plan.
First, as a teacher herself, she knew teachers from other schools and leveraged those connections to pull in about 30 or 40 students on a regular basis. She offered each parent 90-minute sessions for $45. She informed them that it would be group sessions. The goal of the tutoring center was to help raise grades and create a family atmosphere. My wife was able to do this because she is a master at classroom management which she has honed through many years teaching at some of the toughest schools in the nation.
In her program, everyone’s grades increased rather in their regular classes or the SAT. For, the SAT she specifically offered Saturday group sessions limited to 20 students at once. She found if these were well planned they could offer the same value as group sessions.
She was no longer limited by the library. Also, her tutoring center was located next to the driving school which was a beacon for new students. Finally, she focused on math and science, and sometimes I would help or should hire another teacher from her school.
As an added bonus, she throws birthday parties for students and really gets to know the kids. By doing so, she built a real relationship and kids who went off to college would often stop by to see when they were home.
This shows that you can make money and yet create a business that is genuinely committed to helping kids and valuing them as people.
