Start A Modern Smart Home For Under $100
It seems like all the craze and rave today is about Smart Home Technology. “Hey Google, turn off the lights”, or, “Hey Alexa, start a timer”. But, what if you could take this smart technology to the next level for under $100? This article will review five different pieces that you can acquire for less than $100 to get your Smart Home up and running. However, fair warning, once you get started with Smart Home, it is hard to stop! There are countless ideas and integrations you can use with Smart Home Technology and these are just a few to get you started.
1. Voice Controlled Assistant

It is extremely difficult to go wrong with either of these devices and they have very little differences. The Amazon Echo dot uses the “Alexa” platform for Smart Home control, while the Nest Mini uses the “Google” platform. This is the brain, or home, of your Smart Home so please choose carefully. Make sure the devices you are wanting to get pair well with Alexa or Google. For example, there is some Smart Home Technology that will work with Alexa, but not Google, and vise versa, so check out the description of the tech you want before purchasing. You can find the Google Nest Mini for $29.00 at the Google Store and the Echo Dot 3rd Generation for $49.99 on Amazon.
2. WiFi Smart Plug

The second thing you will need is some type of Smart Plug. I recommend the Wyze Smart Plug as you can find it in a 2-pack for $19.99 at Home Depot. Essentially, you can hook up any outlet powered item (such as a fan) and it can then be voice-controlled with your voice assistant. For example, “Hey Google, turn off the fan”.
3. WiFi Smart Bulbs

With Smart Bulbs, you can control any light bulb in your house with your phone or your voice. For example, “Alexa, turn on kitchen lights”. This addition can be great if you forget to leave a light on in the other room at night or if you leave for a vacation and want to turn on some lights so it looks like you are home.
4. Smart Camera + Motion Sensor

Once you have a WiFi camera and motion sensor, the possibilities are endless. I recommend Wyze once again for this category, as you can get the starter pack (pictured above) for $47.96 from Home Depot. This comes with an indoor HD camera, a motion sensor, a smart bridge, and 2 connection sensors that you can place on doors or drawers. With a smart camera, you can now check in on your pets or kids while you are away or at work. With continuous recording and motion detection, you can always see what triggered an event or what happened to that garbage can when you were gone, courtesy of your new puppy. The motion sensor is nice because you can make your smart lights, or any device, motion-activated. For example, when I walk in the kitchen after 9:30 PM it will turn on the kitchen lights automatically.
That’s it! That is all you need to get started in this new phase of Smart Home Technology. The possibilities are endless. Why not give technology a chance to do the work for you and make your life easier?
