No star that shines in our sky Was alive when darkness died* The stars that shine in our night Are but children of their light

That brings us to you and I We are born of such a star Our atoms came from nebuli From stars who’ve died away so far

We were born as owners here Belonging to our cosmic sphere So never doubt your place my dear Your mother stars have placed you here

*“Darkness died” about 13.5 billion years ago at the formation of the first stars. Prior to that, the universe was opaque. The stars we see at night are actually ‘descendants’ (from generations of stars subsequently formed after the first stars). Virtually all of the elements heavier than hydrogen and helium were formed in the cores of stars and dispersed in their supernovae. So, the atoms in our bodies are predominantly from the cores of stars. We are literally the children of the stars.
