Star Athletes And Their Mates

Hint: It appears that Black superstars like their boos to be lighter than they are

The Yahoo homepage which provides a lot of grist for my writing mill did not disappoint today. Along with the “news” stories (I put the word in quotes because most of what’s news to Yahoo’s editors is superfluous dog shit to me) comes a lot of paid-for ads posing as news. Yahoo has to pay its staff and stockholders so I needn’t elaborate on why they would run that crap. And one of those “stories” concerned star athletes and their girlfriends or wives, all of whom were pictured with their studly boos.

There’s some old mythology in the Afro-American community that says lighter-skinned individuals are of a higher social caste than their darker counterparts. Personally, I find that mythology curious as mostly, I don't assign social caste ratings by the darkness of another person’s skin. But that’s beside the point.

The great majority of the athletes pictured were Black football players of varying skin tones. Without fail, there was not one (after viewing a couple of dozen photos) who has a significant other who is darker than he is. Not one! About 1/3rd of the women were white. A second 1/3rd were indistinguishable as to race, and the last third clearly were Afro-American — but lighter than their male counterparts.

The few white athletes shown all had white better halves except one — whose wife was darker than any other woman pictured in the feature. And of course, most of the wives/girlfriends were extremely attractive — though there were one or two who wouldn’t turn heads on the streets of New York.

With a significant sampling, I’d have to say that Black athletes like their women lighter-skinned than they are. And white athletes are more likely to choose mates of their own race than their black colleagues. So much for the mythology about lighter-skinned being above darker individuals. Clearly, when it comes to Black athletes, the mythology is not mythology. They demonstrate unequivocally that the ethos is alive and well. One need only check out that silly site to see the current state of affairs when it comes to how star athletes roll when it comes to choosing a mate.
