I had a chance to check out a stalagmite exhibit recently. As we do not have any caves in Singapore, this was a rare opportunity for me to witness this geological marvel.

So what exactly are stalagmites?

A stalagmite is a rock formation that is common in many caves. Stalagmites are formed on the floor of the cave. They are mostly found in limestone caves. When water runs off of the rock surfaces of the cave, it leaves mineral deposits of various types. Stalagmites usually take the shape of elongated cones rising from the floor of the cave.

It takes thousands, if not millions of years, for stalagmites to form, as water droplets gradually deposit minerals layer by layer.

Their growth is a testament to the marvelous work of nature, shaping and reshaping our planet over the years.
