TAKING OFF|GARDENING

Spring Is Coming Which Inspires French Ways On My Balcony These Days

Not all food is created equal as I have been reminded of by multiple people in the United States

How I love French pastries, let me count the ways…..Photo by KL Simmons

A few things lately have got me thinking more and more about a 3 week vacation I spent with my boyfriend in Val-de-la-Haye, a neighborhood just outside of Rouen, France, in August of 2019.

MN recently wrote and published a story about that part of the world that made me feel nostalgic for those 3 weeks of rural joy I experienced in northwestern France 2 1/2 years ago.

So much has happened in the world and in my life since then that it felt a bit surreal and beautiful to travel back in time and space to that place and time.

There were no mask mandates, no restrictions, no vaccines…life was relatively “normal”.

My boyfriend and I had booked an apartment via Airbnb for 3 weeks in this suburban neighborhood that was close to an animal park, but not close to any supermarkets — and we didn’t have a car.

Clearly, I love animals and good, homegrown food is important to me and my boyfriend.

The hosts of our Airbnb loaned us their bikes which allowed us to get around easier and travel farther. That’s how we got to the animal park.

One day, on our way back home from the animal park, we saw a sign for a small farm where we could buy local fruits and vegetables.

This sight had me salivating! Photo by KL Simmons

Considering the ordeal we had to go through just to buy groceries, stumbling upon this farm that was only a 10–15 minute bike ride from our temporary home seemed like a dream!

I felt like we stumbled upon a bit of heaven. Photo by KL Simmons

The reason this all comes back more vividly to my mind these days is because my boyfriend and I are now living in an apartment that has an enclosed balcony that’s like a little greenhouse.

Have you ever seen black tomatoes?! This was my first time. Photo by KL Simmons

I’ve grown tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, vegetables and herbs in my backyard in Philadelphia for a few years , but I’ve never grown anything on an enclosed balcony before.

This is new territory.

I have lots of homework and research to do, but I am so phreakin’ excited for the possibilities that lie ahead!

If you have any tips and/or tricks to share, please do so in the comments.

Spring is coming!

Isn’t this pony the prettiest little creature!?
