Spring into a Story: A poem & Quatern or two about spring
The DEP Spring Contest

Robin you sing true
Atop the blanket
Feathers unruffled
By the author, inspired by the robin who came to sing to me this spring at 5: a. m. on top of the birch tree outside my window
Put spring in a story said Dr. Korosi.
Well that’s easy, I thought, & started to think
About what makes spring such a wonderful month
But to distill it, now there’s the rub
The robin has been seated atop my tree
As if he’s there to sing, just for me
Such a whisp of a bird, so tiny and small
Yet he sits 5 meters high as if he’s tall
Every evening till the blackbird comes
To serenade me in the evening
After the sun has set on a summer’s day
When the day has ended for those at play
The spring’s a start as Lisa already said
So jump up now, get out of your bed
Spring’s designed to wake you and make you see
There’s more to life than duvet and tea
Wait, that’s not all I wanted to say:
Springs a warm up to summer’s
play
I stole ‘summer’s play’* from the poet Blake
Who knew a thing or two about what’s at stake
When words come into being formed from feelings raw
Look, I wasn’t really keeping score
But since you wondered what is spring?
Well spring’s a myriad colourful things
Spring’s a daffodil, spring’s a primula,
spring’s a hyacinth, spring’s a crocus,
spring’s a Ranunculus, spring’s a glory (of the snow)
Spring’s a tulip shooting from the ground
Spring’s a tinge of willow’s white on brown
Spring’s a season, at least it used to be
Of March winds, April showers, and breeze at sea
In spring I’ve seen butterflies, snail, & bees.

Notes:
‘Summers play’ is a phrase from ‘The Fly’ a poem by William Blake—a well-known London poet who wrote with emotion about nature and human suffering.
