Spotlight Hudson Ohio
The best of small-town charm in the Midwest

As a new resident of Northeast Ohio, I have fallen in love with the small town of Hudson. Hudson is located less than an hour south of Cleveland.
They have some of my favorite chain stores (White House Black Market and The Loft) and a selection of fun local shops.
Hudson’s Main Street is one of those places where you can park your car and wander around the shops on foot.
History of Hudson
I knew there was something special about Hudson the first time I visited, but it would take some online sleuthing to figure out just how remarkable this little town is.
Turns out Hudson was a key location on the Underground Railroad and was the home of John Brown.
You can read about the extensive history of Hudson here.
My favorite spots
The Learned Owl Bookshop
The Learned Owl is the epitome of a cozy bookshop. When you open the door you are greeted by friendly employees who ask if you need any help.
To your left, you see a shelf with staff picks. To your right, you see new fiction. The store may seem small from the road, but it’s good size on the inside.
I especially loved the room upstairs dedicated to Valentine's Day. I ended up buying a book from the collection. I love supporting small bookstores because I want them to thrive.

Open Door Coffee Company
Open Door Coffee Company is no Starbucks. It has a unique, classy, hometown feel. There is a bar where folks can sit and have their coffee while talking with the baristas.
They also have tables set up all around for folks who want to work.
I can’t speak for everything on their menu, but I can say their filthy (two shots of espresso) latte and their dairy-free carrot cake muffin were superb.
I sipped my latte while browsing The Learned Owl before seeing the no drinks sign..oops!
Honorable Mentions
There were numerous small shops selling organic, fair trade, and locally made products.
I went inside one shop located next door to The Lively Owl and found it absolutely delightful for the senses. It smelled like candles and had books on mindfulness and organic eating mixed in with clothing and handbags.
Trip Planning
If you have never been to Hudson, I recommend making a day of it. Drive around and check out the historical places, have lunch at one of the many local establishments, grab a coffee at the Open Door Coffee Company, and walk around the shops.
You are guaranteed to be greeted by friendly faces who will be more than willing to point you in the right direction during your exploration.
