Spontaneous Writing: Down a Rabbit Hole or a Journey of Self-Discovery?
My experiment to smash writer’s block
I want to share with you something that I have been experimenting with. Lately, I have been having a bit of a problem with “writer’s block”, for lack of a better term. It stems from my fear that what I write won’t be “good enough.” I have a lot of ideas, notes, headlines, and snippets of research on several topics, but I just freeze when I sit down to try to write about any one of these topics.
What I have started doing in the past week is spontaneous writing, which is writing without an agenda or plan. I don’t think about punctuation, spelling, or grammar. Without the inhibition of rules or expectations, my thoughts can flow freely.
Spontaneous writing allows you to tap into your creativity without overthinking. I am the queen of overthinking! When I turn off that part of my brain that is constantly analyzing as I write, I am free to explore different ideas, experiment with language, and let my imagination run wild. That’s when I begin to experience the joy of writing again!
This can lead to surprising discoveries and innovative ways of expressing yourself. Some of these “down the rabbit hole” imaginary trips have given me ideas to use in the poetry stories I like to write. Spontaneous writing fuels a sense of playfulness in the writing process.
What makes your writing special to you? I believe that spontaneous writing allows you to develop your own unique voice as a writer. Without worrying about writing for a specific assignment or audience, you’re free to write in a style that feels authentic to you.
The best advice I’ve received from reading what successful writers on Medium have to say about finding success is to write in an authentic voice. In fact, what we are told about increasing our chances of being boosted is to write more personal stories. Finding your voice can only enhance your ability to write effectively in ways that resonate with readers.
So next time you’re feeling stuck or uninspired, why not take a break from your usual routine and let your pen (or keyboard) wander wherever it may lead? Who knows what treasures you might uncover along the way!
Happy writing!!
I’m grateful to my friend Surekha Chandrasekhar for her encouragement early on in my writing journey on Medium. I am pleased to be able to contribute to her publication The Pen and Prose. If you would like to write for The Pen and Prose, here are the submission guidelines:
