It was the hottest day of the year, so far. Sarah was miserable.
“Can’t we get out of here?”
Mom gathered the kids. “Let’s go for a ride.”
Groans from all, except Sarah. “Air conditioner,” she explained.
Stampede to the car. Mom smiled.
An hour later they arrived at the lake. “Go on, get wet. Soak your heads.”
The kids raced for the water as Mom pulled coolers out of the trunk.
Joining her children, she splashed and played like a kid.
Nothing beats a surprise picnic after getting soaking wet on a scorching afternoon.
Sarah kissed her. “Thanks, Mom!”
We didn’t have air conditioning when I was a kid. Sometimes it felt like we must be wet or die of heatstroke.
Drabbles are complete stories with exactly 100 words. They are not only fun to write, they help us develop editing skills! It’s the old “Kill your darlings” with immediate gratification.
