Spiritual growth in a material world

There’s more to you than what meets the eye

Spiritual health doesn’t get nearly as much attention or care as physical or even mental health do. And, while it makes sense, given the fast-paced, material world we live in, it saddens me to see how disconnected some people are from their own selves and, consequently, from others around them. All too often, I’m confronted with people who have no interest in anything beyond the physical. Money, status, power are all they’re chasing in this world. And, yet, isn’t there more to life than that?

As someone who’s had prophetic dreams since childhood, experiences with the extra-human world, and psychic premonitions, I’ve always found it hard to find people who get me. People are quick to judge what they haven’t experienced, so I’ve kept any mention of spirituality off the table. However, having focused a lot on my spiritual development recently, I found it apt to share a few of the insights I’ve gained through this period of growth.

You’re more than what you have

With our society telling us that the material world is all that matters, it becomes difficult for some to realize that there is more to us than our physical existence. This leaves out the metaphysical, which is a conglomerate of our emotions, intuition, sensations, and, otherwise, ‘extraterrestrial’ qualities. Now, of course, we live in a 3D world, so our physical experience matters. But, it’s not what defines us. How we treat people, the world, and non-human lives is what makes us who we are. We can have all the riches in the world, but if we fail to spiritually connect with our higher purpose and meaning, we’re bound to be unhappy, living unfulfilled lives, constantly searching for something ‘more.’

Riffing on my own life experiences, I wasn’t born into a wealthy family, had a turbulent childhood, and had to work hard in order to get somewhere in life. Things were never handed to me on a silver platter. And yet, even though, at times, I struggled to see the fruits of my labor and was ready to give up, I stayed adamant in doing, not only what I loved, but also what I knew would benefit and inspire others. I didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer; instead, I kept looking for new opportunities, new adventures, and new experiences. Instead of being motivated by riches or status, I became determined to become the best version of myself and truly uphold the values most pertinent to me. Even though this usually meant that I wound up being alone in my endeavors, I felt that I was doing the right thing and that kept me going.

Spirituality goes beyond religion

As a Catholic myself, I’ve been engaged in organized religion practices all of my life. However, it was mainly imposed upon me by my traditional parents, and not something that I felt especially called towards. Now, not to say that I have completely forsaken my Catholic identity, but I’ve become more and more aware of how limiting organized religion can be. The practices and customs have become so ingrained into my mind that it was hard to find what I was being called towards. I was going through the motions, trying to fit in with the religious community, but I wasn't getting anywhere, spiritually speaking.

Today, I feel much more spiritually fulfilled, when I go out in nature or meditate. Attending religious services has little to no effect on me nowadays as I realize that spirituality is an inner journey that begins with the self. This means that everyone will follow a different path. For me that path entails developing my intuitive and psychic abilities through the use of tarot and crystals. For others, it may simply be going for a walk in the woods to clear their energy. Everyone can find the one thing that makes them feel satisfied spiritually, and, it doesn’t necessarily have to be confined to a particular religion denomination. At the end of the day, it should be fulfilling to you and help you grow as an individual, not a burden or a requirement that you have to check off at the end of every day/week/month.

There’s always more to things than you think

When you stop to observe the world, you’ll see that what you see isn’t all that you get. Once you look deeper, you’ll start to see patterns and details that you wouldn’t have noticed had you been looking without seeing. What I mean by this is many of the things around us have become so natural to us, they’ve pretty much become background noise. Things we take for granted. Things we’ve come to accept will always be there.

A simple way to illustrate this is with travel. When visiting places we aren’t familiar with, we become fascinated by things and places that long-time residents of the country/city/state hardly find noteworthy. However, for us, these seemingly simple things become points of wonder and awe. We return from our travels with the belief that these places are so wonderful and life-changing, failing to realize that the very places we are from also hold their own beauty to onlookers.

This relates to the insider/outsider perspective. When we become more attuned with out spirituality, we start to see things in fresh eyes, meaning we see them from an onlooker’s perspective. We become open to noticing things that we may have brushed off or, simply, failed to see the value or complexity of.

Throughout my own spiritual journey, I’ve come to realize there is so much that the Universe is trying to tell us. However, many of these things, we simply rationalize and brush off as coincidence. We fail to listen to what our intuition is trying to tell us about given people, places, and things. Or, if you’re anything like me, you start to think you’re going crazy for sensing and experiencing things that others aren’t experiencing. However, with time you come to see that your experiences are valid and that, your feelings, emotions, and reactions are, indeed, signs of your ever-evolving spirituality.

To close, it may be hard to open up about your spirituality to people, but, trust me, you will find people that get you. It may take some time to find your tribe but they’re out there. Stay true to yourself and you’re bound to draw in people who value what you do and validate the experiences you have had. At the end of the day, spirituality is all about you. Your growth and what you learn in this life are up to your own free will. No one should minimize your feelings and what you’re being called to do, and, if they do, well, then they’re simply not for you and that’s ok too.
