A list of notable anniversaries of this year

The specialty of 2023 is that it is the year of Millets. Millets are a set of cereals that are less popular compared to Rice and Wheat but are still widely used in Asia and Africa. Unlike other cereals which provide only carbohydrates; millets are rich in proteins.

A Special diet of millet in low-income countries has helped overcome malnutrition and also consumes less water than rice and wheat. India is the largest producer of millet in the world.

Following is a month-wise-date-wise list of events and the anniversaries celebrated this year.

January

4th — 380th birth anniversary of Sir Issac Newton, unlike the popular notion that he is a physicist, he was a Mathematician; His main contribution is the number system and calculus. Today he is one of the most renowned scientists in the world and his contributions affect our daily lives.

6th — 185 years of invention and the use of Morse Code. Morse Code was a popularly used telecommunication technique to encode and transmit information. Morse Code was mainly used in Telegraph. It is named after Samuel Morse.

7th — 167th birth anniversary of Nicola Tesla. He is one of the world’s most renowned engineers with 300 patents on his name. He moved from Serbia to the USA where he received funding from George Westinghouse for building AC Machines.

14th- 124th death anniversary of Lewis Carrol who is the author of Alice in Wonderland, a renowned novel for children.

17th- 250th-anniversary crossing of Antarctica by James Cook who is credited with exploration of southern islands; before he went to Australia.

19th- Apple Lisa turned 40 which was the first Personal Computer with GUI enabled for ease of use. GUI enables a user to visually operate a computer without having deep knowledge of the functioning of a computer.

30th- 150th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. He is known as India’s father of the nation. He is well-known for his fight against British colonialism in India and abroad. He is today a world-renowned figure. He was assassinated on this day.

February

1- 20th anniversary of the Columbia disaster which killed seven astronauts onboard the space shuttle. The space shuttle was returning back to Earth after a mission.

3- 555th death anniversary of Johannes Guttenberg- the inventor of the printing press. The first printed book was Bible.

19- 145th anniversary of the phonograph invented by Edison and 550th birth of Nicolaus Copernicus. Copernicus discovered that Sun was the center of the solar system and not the Earth, challenging the age-old concept.

21st- 70th anniversary of the discovery of DNA structure. James Watson and Francis Crick gave their biggest contribution to molecular biology.

23rd -130th anniversary of the invention of IC engines. Nicolaus Otto invented a four-stroke engine that uses combustion to obtain mechanical energy.

March

12th -100 years of Phonofilm, it released the first film with sound.

14th- 140th Death anniversary of Karl Marx; he was from Prussia (Germany). Although his major works were based in Great Britain. He formulated the idea of Communism through his work- Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital. Although his ideas remained controversial even today, his works have strongly influenced many and have even brought a lot of positive changes in the workplace.

21st- 105 years of Somme offensive. During WW1 in 1916, British and French armies launched a joint offensive against the German forces. After a stoppage during the winter, the battle resumed in 1917 and was successful in weakening Germany.

22nd- 30th anniversary of the invention of Pentium. It was released by the Intel Corporation. Pentium is a widely used 32-bit microprocessor in computers based on x86 architecture. It is considered to be a revolution in computer science.

26th- 70th anniversary of the invention of the Polio Vaccine. The first successful vaccine was created by US physician Jonas Salk. He tested the same on his family in 1953. This brought down the cases of Polio in the country.

April

4th — 55th death anniversary of Martin Luther King. He was an American civil rights activist and led the movement. Unfortunately, he was assassinated in a hotel in Tennessee. He was the youngest person to receive a Nobel Peace Prize.

6th — 540th birth anniversary of Raphael legendary painter and architect.

8th- 50th death anniversary of Pablo Picasso, a painter who was well known for his famous paintings.

14th- 20th anniversary of Human Genome Project Completed- headed by NIH for research on DNA.

23rd — 20 years of Apple online music store- iTunes. It was released by Steve Jobs in 2003 as a groundbreaking event.

30th — 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web (WWW) becomes public domain. In 1993, Tim Berners Lee. CERN put WWW in the public domain.

May

8th — 120th birth anniversary of Paul Gauguin. Gauguin led the Symbolist art movement in France and set the stage for Fauvism and Expressionism.

20th — 150th anniversary years of Jeans. Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis obtained a U.S. patent for developing jeans pants for miners.

29th — 70 years of the foot on Mt Everest. Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary were the first human beings to climb the Mountain.

30th — 245th death anniversary of Voltaire. He was a writer, philosopher, poet, dramatist, historian, and polemicist of the French Enlightenment movement. His main ideas were freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and secularism.

June

1st — 55th death anniversary of Helen Keller. She was a famous activist and author who was deaf and blind.

4th — 240th year of the hot air balloon; its flight started Montgolfier brothers at Versailles, France in 1783.

13th — 40 years of Pioneer 10; Pioneer 10 is a NASA space probe launched that completed the first mission to the planet Jupiter.

16th — Valentina Tereskova’s travel to space 60th anniversary. She was a Soviet cosmonaut, the first woman ever to fly in space.

18th — Amelia Earhart-75 years, she was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic.

19th -400th birth anniversary of Blaize Pascal; he invented a modern calculator. He worked with pressure whose unit is named after him.

27th- 125 years after Joshua Slocum accomplished the record for sailing around the world solo.

July

3rd — 95 years of color tv; John Logie Baird was the inventor of color TV.

18th -125 years of discovery of Polonium. It was discovered jointly by Marie and Pierre Curie. Polonium is a nuclear active but rare element. Today, Russia produces the largest amount of commercial Polonium.

25th — 45th birth anniversary of Louise Brown- the world’s first IVF baby.

August

27th — 140 years since Krakatoa volcano’s last eruption in Indonesia. Krakatoa eruption created the loudest sound explosion in history.

September

4th- 135 years of Kodak camera. It came into the market as a handheld camera convenient for personal use.

15th — Zonda’s 55 years of the first spacecraft to orbit the moon.

19th — 130 years since New Zealand gave women the right to vote making it the first country to grant women the right to vote.

26th- 50 years of Concorde supersonic airplane. It was one of the fastest airplanes developed. It was jointly developed by the British and French.

November

8th -230 years of Louvre Museum in Paris. It was formed after the French Revolution.

December

1st -The first automobile was invented by Henry Ford 110 years;

17th- 120th anniversary of the invention of airplane flight by the Wright brothers.

26th- India’s 73rd Republic Day. The special guest for the day was Egyptian President Fateh Al Sisi.

12th- 93rd Civil Disobedience Movement

May

3rd- 24 years since the beginning of the Kargil war. Spanning over two months India succeeded in defeating the Pakistani intrusion in Indian territory.

10th- 166th anniversary of the Sepoy Mutiny or India’s first war against Independence.

11th- Anniversary of Pokhran II explosion

18th- Anniversary of Pokhran I explosion

June

23rd- 266 years since the Battle of Plassey- the war which established British control in the Indian subcontinent.

August

5th–58 years since the 1965 war between India and Pakistan

8th–81st anniversary of the Quit India movement

15th-India’s 76th Independence Day

September

5th- 103rd anniversary of Non-Cooperation

October

22nd- 15th-anniversary Launch of Chandrayan 1

November

5th- 10th of Mangalyaan — Pride of Asia as per China

10th- 364th of Battle of Pratapgarh

December

3rd- 52nd of Bangladesh Liberation

4th- 194 years of Banning of Sati in India.

18th- Anniversary of Annexation of Goa into India.
