It suggests that our thoughts are the primary means by which we communicate our desires to the universe, God, or cosmic forces. The author posits that the universe responds to the repetition and intensity of our thoughts, not their content, meaning that both positive and negative thoughts can be manifested. The article emphasizes the power of concentration and the need for individuals to harness their mental energies towards constructive desires rather than allowing their minds to wander aimlessly or dwell on negative outcomes. It also draws parallels between the universe's responsiveness to our thoughts and the way internet search engines adapt to our search patterns, highlighting the importance of mindfulness in directing our inner dialogue to create the reality we desire.

Speaking to the Universe

Becoming super clear with our thoughts

Have you ever wondered if someone is listening to your prayers and wishes? Does God perhaps record everything? What about those dreams that never come true? Are we in control of our destinies or some unseen cosmic forces determine our fate? Do we just do our best and leave the rest to chance? Would that be all to life as we know it? Come join me to explore a bit more and find out if there is more to be discovered along the way of life.

What is a wish? It’s a desire or hope for something to take place. Simply put we don't have it yet. It could be that high paying job, more love in the relationship, or some sense of peace. If we don't have it yet and wish for it sincerely and deeply is there an entity that is fulfilling these wishes for us? Does our prayer become like an application form we sign or date and post to God maybe who has more control over all events and hence can give it to us?

I cannot prove or disprove God, but I can sure help you with the application form. Picture this — We are in a restaurant and order pancakes. The waiter goes inside and tells the staff about our order. Then we want something else, cancel it and order eggs. It still doesn’t feel like it and we order waffles now. Every time all the waiter can do is go in and change the order and serve it. Worst yet he/she might yell at you and say ‘Make up your mind!’

Aah… Our mind is the wish making entity. Obviously, our bodies don't wish, it's our minds that do. If we are feeling lazy and don't want to go for that morning run, it's not the body who made that choice, it's the mind. The body is not any particular feeling, it's the mind which fluctuates from laziness to boredom, or happiness to enthusiasm. The body simply executes the instruction. Just like the waiter.

In all of this what stands out is the power of focussing our minds. Usually, when we want something really bad, this super important wish, we put all our time, energy, effort into it. That’s focussing. That’s when we have made up our minds and taken the action. It’s zooming into the depths of the same desire. All other times we are simply swinging like a pendulum from one desire to another, changing our order. And if the desire keeps changing what is the executor likely to say ‘Make up your mind!’

The mechanics of wishing

In the grand cosmos when we say we are wishing and praying to the invisible forces to fix our problems, how exactly does that happen? What is that mechanism? It’s through our minds! Our mind via the fundamental entity called a thought makes the request. But would every thought come true? We have on average 70,000 thoughts a day both positive and negative. What a disaster it would be if all micro ones also came true! Which led me to wonder, which thoughts from among all these are picked up for manifestation by the Universe or God or any other entity? How does it know which ones to make come true and which ones to ignore?

From all the thoughts that pass through our awareness every moment, the ones which cluster together towards a particular goal and thought repeatedly develop into what we call a wish or a desire or a longing. This could fervent prayers for a family member, peace for a disturbed society, or even recovering from an illness. There is no way to distinguish if this cluster is a true wish or just obsessive thinking. When many negative thoughts cluster together, it turns into a negative desire. The listener, in this case, the cosmos, does not distinguish what type of desire it is, it only looks for repetition.

When we pray we usually are in a solemn mood or in a place of worship or reading scriptures. Do we inform the Universe — “I am about to make some wishes now” Then utter the wishes? Then end it by saying “Prayer ended”. Obviously not. That's simply because we have an on-going stream of thoughts in our heads. We never stop thinking or wishing. There is no start or stop or a way to separate and indicate to the Universe when we have begun wishing and when we have stopped. It can happen at any time. Our monkey mind just jumps and needs to be trained to be steady.

Wishing is not equal to desiring

Do you know what this means? It means every time we repeatedly think about something it gets highlighted to the cosmos that it's a wish because we are paying so much attention to it. Woah! I am going to say that again. Every time a cluster of thoughts appears in the cosmos, THAT gets noticed as a wish regardless of whether you and I think it's positive or not.

The most important aspect to take note of is that while we do this quite well with our positive hopes, we are also doing this with harmful thoughts. Worrying or imagining the worst, as repeated clusters of thoughts, hours, or even days spent obsessing about the future events are all wishes for the Universe. It listens and knows all of our innermost thoughts and gives traction to the ones most dominant in our minds regardless of the types of thoughts. How do we know this is true? We can look at our outer circumstances which are a pure reflection of our inner thoughts. Our relationships, money, place in society, well-being, and self-love all indicate where our attention is going.

Another analogy for this is internet search engines. Today, if you repeatedly look up something on the net, you will notice that similar searches start to appear in your feed as if the internet is paying attention to the no. of hits on the keywords you type or just spying on us. If you search issues in diabetes you will get that in the feed. If you search for ways to reverse diabetes it will be in your feed. Our cosmos is far more intelligent and keeps track of all beings and their wishes or searches and longing.

Thinking is equal to desiring

Swinging from preparing for a new job to the regrets of the old one, firstly won't get counted as a cluster of thoughts. One minute we dream of that perfect office and a few hours later we are in deep regret about the past. By evening we are thinking of weight loss and by night we have binge-watched tv. It's a simple depletion of our energies getting us nowhere closer to our goals. They are scattered all over the place. When was the last time you spent time fully absorbed into just one goal?

Meditation describes the power of concentration as the most important skill anyone can develop. Relentless focus on thoughts that create a positive outcome, is a habit of successful persons. Ask around those you feel are good at something and you will learn they have unwavering faith in their positive thoughts about that goal. It makes it easier for the Universe to deliver that to them faster.

What about the Universe?

We have called the Universe as the listener. We all have different labels and attributes associated with these invisible powers. The outside unseen forces that can come to our rescue and save us, is one bit. The same power is within us too as we are made from the same divine substance. The seeking, asking, praying, wanting, desiring, longing, hoping is one part of the Universe speaking to another part of it. Like Aladdin’s genie who says — “Your wish is my command”, we must remember, that the genie never interrupts or accepts only positive wishes and ignores the negative wishes. It says yes to all!

This is nothing to be scared of. It's liberating and empowering to know that obsessive thinking needs to be channeled positively because everything is being heard. We don’t want our worrisome wishes or worst fears to come true, right? What’s the remedy then? Stop thinking about them. Use that power spent in worrying and revamp it to hope. As soon as your attention goes towards what you don’t want, re-route it to what you do want because they are different destinations. Keep practicing and feel the difference in the true power of Asking.
