PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

Sparkling in Awe

Third Week of July

See the world through the eyes of your inner child. The eyes that sparkle in awe and amazement as they see love, magic and mystery in the most ordinary things. — Henna Sohail

Day One

It is often ordinary things like the fly on the buds above that catch my attention and fill me with wonder and awe — tiny details and seemingly simple interactions in the huge working wheels of the universe.

This is the last week I will be spending in my hometown this summer. I have been seeing everything through the eyes of my inner child and capturing things that cause my eyes to sparkle in awe. I was hoping the buds of these new-to-me flowers (pictured above) would open before I left but, they didn’t.

Day Two

This ant and its shadow were not the original subjects of this photoshoot, but seeing them and thinking about shadows piqued my interest. Often we hear that shadows hide things. Having this shadow exposed to me in this way, at this time, gave me a free, happy, and open feeling. I saw light in the past, present, and future as the ant journeyed back and forth.

It was also amusing seeing the duality — the ant and its shadow both navigating their way along the roof of the shed.

Day Three

Seagulls are not one of my favorite types of birds. Their scavenger ways kind of creep me out, but the stillness of this group gave me a sense of peace at that moment.

There was another dock very close by that had as many if not more gulls too. Of course, as we got closer, they set off in the organized chaos of their getaway. Luckily, they headed in the opposite direction, so no fear of a bird poop incident.

Day Four

This evening was a bit calmer than the one before. The water was as smooth as glass, offering a mirror effect that I had to admire and capture. I was glad for the chance to experience a double dose of this quaint lakeside setting. I hope my reflections can be so clear.

Day Five

I spent many hours at this bridge as a kid fishing and taking in the sunset with friends. I am not one to kiss and tell, so I don’t have a kissing story to share, but I love the sign that has been hung here. It is a reminder to hold those special moments in our hearts.

Day Six

The theme of this week was spending time on and around the water. The sunset, wake, and spray behind the boat are some of my most calming, awe-inspiring, and content feeling scenes in life. I can never get enough.

Day Seven

When I stopped to say goodbye to my grandma on my way to the airport for my flight home, I sat next to her African Violet table. She has taken her time to meticulously care for African Violets for as long as I can remember. This picture serves as a beautiful symbol that reminds me of my grandma and of the time we spent together this summer. (I turned the front pot a quarter of a turn counter-clockwise. It was the right move for the day, but I put it back as to not interfere with the routine.)
