Space, in Mind

“The imagination is the golden pathway to everywhere.” ―Terence McKenna

I don’t think I’m a good writer. I get writer’s block quickly; I struggle for titles, and while I can imagine scenes in my head, I sometimes feel I lack the ability to string together coherent descriptions on the page.

But with that said, I love to write. Writing is freeing. It allows the writer to create a space, and the reader to journey there. I’ve always loved to go somewhere my feet have never traveled, even if it’s just in my mind.

My wife is the creative writer in the family. I think my children take the imagination gene from her. Her writing can take me to the place she has created. I feel like I can interact with her characters. I can feel the high-back chair in the coffee shop where one of her stories takes place. She’s just good. It is a true art to make a reader’s senses fire off.

My children seem to have this ability. They create spaces in their rooms and in their minds. Classrooms in school where their toys are the students, houses where they are the make-believe owners, restaurants where they are cooking all kinds of outlandish meals. This space was my favorite when I was a child, when I could make anything or anyone I could imagine and be free.

While space can define many things, our surrounds aren’t limited to the physical, our imaginations, our minds, can create their own. A space to breathe and be free. If this last year has taught me anything, the need for mental as well as physical space has only grown.

I think the space my children have created is a reaction to missing out on things in the real world. I know that when they have imaginative play; they have better days. Likewise, I wish I had kept better records of it, but this is simply an observation. I like to think that’s why so many love binging shows or reading the latest popular novels. It creates new space in our imagination, where the real and concrete don’t matter.

I envy the space my children have. I remember mine as a child. I wish I had half the ability to create like they do. I use writing as my chance to create my space. Whether it’s just my views on technology or a simple journal, I like to keep to help me gather my thoughts around the day, writing gives me freedom. It allows me to imagine. It lets my mind follow a path that isn’t always real, but always feels like home.
