Space Exploration

Where do you do it?

I freely admit that I am not an astronaut. I have never gone higher up off this planet than an airliner will take me. I have never breached the many layers of atmosphere surrounding this planet. I have never stepped foot on the moon or any other object in the sky. I have never spent a moment on the International Space Station or any other facility of either science or science fiction. I’ve never seen any Star Trek movie and I’ve only seen one Star Wars movie. I have never left the surly bonds of Earth to touch the face of God.

The face of God is available to all right here on the planet. We don’t have to get into a space suit and fly up in a rocket to see it. Of course, I have never been in a space suit up in a rocket so I really can’t say that with any sort of authority.

Sometimes I think those astronauts are really lucky.

They are taken far, far, far out of their comfort zones into a world not experienced by all of us other Earthlings. I have tried hard to imagine what that would be like but I’m sure my imaginings don’t come close to what those astronauts actually experience.

Can you imagine being in some rocket ship looking down on the planet Earth? You are suddenly above and beyond all the drama taking place on the planet. You are momentarily disconnected from the mass human gestalts that shape our dramas. You suddenly find yourself to be in a place that you can only describe as being ‘between’ God and humankind. You are in a special place between realities. You are looking down on 7 or 8 billion people, all of whom are part of you. And you are part of them. Up in that rocket ship you are briefly separated from that.

You are disconnected. Yet your view of it all creates a whole new kind of connection. You somehow see a new connection to all those humans on that planet. Maybe, for the first time, you actually see your connection to every one of those humans. You could not see the connection until you stepped outside of it.

And in the solitude of empty space you not only see the connection but now you actually FEEL it. Looking down upon our glorious paradise of a planet, you FEEL that which birthed such a paradise into being. We can look up into the night sky in search of the face of God but when we are up in space looking down upon the planet we can see the face of God plain as day.

It is all a matter of perspective and that is worth all the money we’ve spent on space exploration.

But we must not give up on space exploration right here on the planet. We can see the face of “God” here, too. It is a matter of stepping out of our habitual orbits and seeing things from a new angle. The face of “God” is ubiquitous. It is everywhere we look, including in mirrors.

Do we really need to go into space to see the face of “God?” Do we really need to leave paradise in order to finally see it for the first time? Can we leave our comfort zones without having to sign up for NASA?

Maybe we don’t need a rocket ship. Maybe we ARE a rocket ship? Maybe we are all astronauts taking a vacation on the paradise known as Planet Earth.

Maybe we are “God” looking in the mirror. Maybe from this perspective paradise isn’t such a horrible place after all. Maybe we can appreciate and love the paradise we are vacationing in. Maybe we can see that from within that paradise without having to get in a rocket.

Can we FEEL the planet without leaving it? Can we FEEL it no matter where on it we find ourselves?

Can we see the face of “God” in everything that comes into our vision as we spend a life on this incredible paradise of a planet? If so, who would want to leave?
