Sounds in Silence
Creating My Oasis

I am re-discovering the wonderful world of silence and how it soothes my soul and calms my breathing. How it coaxes me into absorbing long-forgotten sounds and sights.
The quietude of pristine snow, the glitter of early morning dew, the gentle cooing of settling doves, trees swaying in the gentle breeze, and the mesmeric splash of falling rain.
I yearn for my old reliable friends. The ticking of the old kitchen clock, the murmuring of the stream at the end of my grandmother’s field, the chirping of nocturnal crickets in our tropical garden, the sound of the sea lulling shells back and forth — Familiar sounds lost in a cloud of distraction.
Closing my eyes I resuscitate them with each breath I inhale and exhale. Listening, I hear children at play laughing in the garden next door and a dog barking from afar.
Is that the chugging of a distant train? The horn of a barge on the mighty river? These sounds of life, wondrous to my ears tune my soul, fill me with gratitude give me comfort and make me whole.
