Working Somewhere Over the Rainbow
The symbolism of my life’s work and how I incorporated it all into my blogging and book writing

Signs and symbols show us our life’s work, sometimes without rhyme or reason to a human concept of why. It’s where life’s work and purpose align with the magnificence of creation by merely a spark of inspiration. But the truth reveals itself only when we choose to follow that spark — no matter how crazy it appears.
Life’s passion and purpose aren’t something to be chased. It is an evolution that reveals itself when divine timing chooses to chime from the universal clock. It manifests by blending our higher conscience with our inner wisdom. Naysayers will try to derail your path, yet secretly, your intuition continues to whisper in your ear.
My evolution is the combination of emerald and ruby jewels that line a path of golden yellow. My name, Julie, is a foundation that morphed into “jules” because my Mom declared that I was her jewel at my birth.
I am lucky. I follow the motto of staying young-in-heart. Embracing the childlike wonderment that, at some point, we long to resurrect. For me, that place is somewhere over the rainbow — where troubles melt like lemon drops, and dreams really do come true.
Through the eyes of a wonder, we see the innate beauty of all the world. The muse of creators shows us the visions of our potential to ascend to that place above all else.
The movie the “Wizard of Oz” is my cinematographic path to enlightenment. It took a dark stormy tornado of my childhood and opened the door of color and imagination. Filled with hopes and wishes for a better life, I was swept into a journey of symbolism and magic. Each scene, character, and musical score tapped into something unexplainable that lived deep inside my soul. At the same time, it provided answers to the questions; initially, I didn’t know I had. Unbeknownst to me, it would become my life’s work to share insights of empowering your mind and muse.
Yes! It empowered me to revel in my power that I couldn’t see, feel, or touch at the time. The power of another haunted my dreams for many years. Once I allowed the messages from the man behind my curtain of fears to be heard and then voiced, life changed.
I held those messages secretly and tightly in the bubble of my thoughts for years. Yet, they always found their way to my pages of art and writing. My first blog, decades ago, was titled We’re Not in Oz Anymore. As I followed a blogging path, attempting to grow readership and monetization, I reached out to a “guru” to critique my blog. The first thing out of the gate of review, I was told I wouldn’t be able to write about Oz forever and should change my path. Of course, back then, I took their word as gospel with my limiting beliefs and mindset.
But isn’t that all part of life? Learning to become secure enough to believe our inner wisdom over others’ opinions is the journey, not the destination.
About ten years ago, in a burst of alignment, I self-published my first book, “Click 3 Times -Beyond the Flying Monkeys.” It was my path of integrating the 12-steps of the anonymity programs with my view from my Wizard of Oz lens. With the magic of learning to believe in yourself, you can overcome the flying monkey thoughts that take over your brain.
The writing was not perfect, but I intended for it to be published that way. A subliminal message that words and creativity are not bred from perfection, our hearts will still receive the message’s intent when we notice the mistakes and move on. I received two of the greatest gifts with that publishing. Permission to print the 12 steps in the book from the organization (not an easy task) and the other a reader’s comment.
Someone within the 12-step program, with only an eighth-grade formal education, told me it was the first book he had ever been able to read through to the end. That comment was priceless and an inspiration for the importance of continuing my work while trusting my intuition.
Changing our thoughts, change lives. Ours and others. Sometimes, when the darkness settles into times in our lives, we need the creativity and imagination of others to inspire us to continue with the hope and faith of brighter days. As I continue my path within this work, I strive to build a golden way with each step toward my best life.
Being mindful of my purpose is like joining the forces of my trio of friends. The scarecrow, until presented with the validation of his intelligence with the diploma of Thinkology. The gift from the wizard to acknowledge his power of awareness and focused attention and to release his negative self-talk. The Tin Man desired a heart to only feel it breaking for him to know he had one. Living within our hearts are the present moments of a life well-lived. Oh, last and certainly my favorite — the Cowardly Lion with the badge of courage to overcome self-doubt and the anxieties of judging himself.
Perhaps, somewhere over the rainbow, a place where dreams really do come true, is an Emerald City found within us. The energetic center of our personal rainbow. The center point of energy, our heart chakra, is represented by the color green and is the place of love and self-love. As we step into the balance of those two loves, the green becomes the emerald jewel. It is the blend of our blue throat chakra of communication, honesty, and empathy and the yellow third chakra of knowledge and intellect which becomes our wisdom.
In the original book, the ruby red slippers were silver in color — representing the silver lining walk of our lives — the sparkling tones of grey between the black and white of our fixed thoughts.
Change isn’t about creating something new. It becomes adding our knowledge, experiences, and creative blend to the old stories. As creators, we discover the balance of adult responsibility while staying young-in-heart. The twelfth step is to carry on the messages we have learned and put purpose into each area of our life. Our thoughts and actions create our reality. Creators accept the challenge to do that each day, whether it is shared or not.
I accept the challenge! I can carry my message through analogies and metaphors using my knowledge, heart-filled wonderment, and courage. It places the stories at the audience members' level of understanding as we all walk the path on the Yellow Brick Road, we call life. Creators are the supporters of the recovery process of hopes and dreams. It belongs to everyone. Sharing our messages is what unity means. Isn’t that worth the work? Be proud of who you are and believe in yourself no matter what muse you follow. The Emerald City awaits you.
