Sometimes When I Look at the Mirror
I wonder if the person is really me?
I didn’t have this doubt earlier. It was recently that I started developing what some people call ‘witness’ that is separate from the body and observes the body and its functioning. I started having the question as to whether the person in the mirror is really me? Or is it just a creation out of the earth in which I am residing?
The perception that I had about myself may not be reflected by the person whom I see in the mirror. I may have changed but the body is not able to cope with the change. Seems diabolical, isn’t it?
I am in fact consciousness. I am the witness that temporarily is residing in this body and experiencing the feelings and emotions that the neurons in the brain are producing. These feelings and emotions seem just mechanical. It responds in a certain manner given a certain stimulus.
Our body is in fact a robot
If we analyze the psychological mechanism that exists in our brain it seems it just responds based on subconscious programming. We don’t want to be angry but we get angry, we don’t want to get anxious but we get anxious. In fact, the witness is just experiencing these feelings based on an automatic mechanism created by our brain.
Our body in fact no different from a robot. I think in some time robots will exactly do what our body does and much more. Does that mean we are lesser than man-made creations like robots?
We are in fact more than feelings and emotions. We are the witness that just observes these emotions but is not affected by them. The body and the personality degrade over time. Some people with mental illness even hallucinate various things but all of them do not take away the feeling that is “me”.
What is our purpose?
This brings to an interesting question if we are the consciousness that is pure bliss then why are we born to suffer and what is our purpose in life? I believe that we are born to evolve and remove the sheaths of ignorance and realize that we are in fact consciousness i.e. pure bliss. No worldly pleasure or relationships can give the love that re-uniting with the supreme consciousness will give. Of course, realizing it is not easy.
“In fact, the whole evolution of mankind is to realize that material objects are just a stepping stone towards realizing the ultimate truth”
Without first satisfying our material needs it is difficult for a person to be spiritual. The spiritual path embodies satisfying material needs.
How to realize the ultimate truth?
If you just consider yourself to be the person whom you see in the mirror then it is difficult to develop the witness and move on the path of spirituality. One needs to first understand the mechanisms of the mind and separate himself from its functioning. The process of catharsis and refinement of the inner child shall help in calming the turmoil present in the mind and pave the path to access stillness.
Once a person is comfortable in his own company and achieves stillness of mind then it is just a matter of time before the spiritual awakening may take place.
“The only thing in our hands is to remove the negativities from our subconscious programming and create an internal environment where higher truth can be realized.”
Understanding the functioning of the subconscious mind and using techniques like catharsis to purge unwanted emotions would help a lot in making the person comfortable in his own company and ultimately realizing the ultimate truth.
Conclusion
The way I perceive myself may not be fulfilled by the person whom I see in the mirror. I am bigger than that. Though I am bound by the emotional mechanism that goes on in the mind of the person whom I see in the mirror I am not that. I am pure consciousness and my goal in this life is to realize and experience this truth. The person I see in the mirror is just a vehicle that I have to use wisely to realize this ultimate truth.
The only thing in my control in this path to self-realization is to purge my mind of unwanted psychological mechanisms that hamper my peace of mind. By applying the process of catharsis and refinement of the inner child I do take small steps in that direction. I hope others too realize the true meaning of life and follow the path of self-growth to achieve it.
