Summary

Samantha Lazar's poem reflects on the act of waiting as a form of patience and a test of free will, drawing a parallel to directing one's life.

Abstract

The poem "Sometimes, the Courage to Wait" by Samantha Lazar delves into the theme of patience as a courageous act, akin to an art director orchestrating life's sequence. It describes waiting not just as a passive activity but as an active choice, a testament to one's belief in free will. The poet illustrates the discomfort of waiting, likened to the physical sensation of dried skin crackling, yet also finds moments of creation within it, such as composing a song. The poem concludes with the author announcing the release of her poetry narrative collection, "Reaching Marrakesh."

filming the sequence of your life as an art director you as a firm believer in free will and someone who can take dictation

you put down all the plays each line of dialogue a spinning afternoon sometimes, the courage to wait names itself patience but usually it is only a balm after sitting on your hands

stinging, edging into the creases a crackle of dried flesh as sparks of sweetgum seeds on the bonfire

you wait to manifest counting cars through the glass a game then a song you compose about passing time
