Summary

The author discusses the importance of understanding Medium's referral credit system, particularly the necessity of using a web browser rather than the mobile app for referrals to count.

Abstract

The author shares a personal experience regarding a missed referral credit from a friend who signed up for a Medium membership using the author's link. Despite regular checks on earnings, the referral credit did not appear, leading to confusion and correspondence with Medium's support team. The issue was resolved when Medium informed the author that referrals made through the mobile app do not count towards referral credits, which should be made via the website. The author, while expressing overall satisfaction with the platform, emphasizes the need for clarity on this point to avoid similar situations for others trying to build an audience and for those referred.

Opinions

  • The author initially felt honored and appreciative when a friend used their referral link to sign up for Medium but was disappointed to find the referral credit did not come through.
  • After troubleshooting the link and waiting for the credit to appear, the author felt it was unfair that they were not aware of the mobile app referral limitation.
  • The author is somewhat upset about the situation, especially considering the potential loss of referral credits, which could be significant for a new writer.
  • Despite the issue, the author maintains a positive view of Medium, praising the platform for the opportunities and community it offers.
  • The author wishes to inform others about the referral process to prevent similar misunderstandings and to ensure that writers receive proper credit for their referrals.
  • The author acknowledges that the information about the referral process might have been previously provided by Medium and takes personal responsibility for not being aware of it.
  • The author expresses gratitude towards Medium and their readers, and encourages sign-ups through their provided link to ensure proper referral credit is received.

Something you should Know about Medium Referral Credit

I wish I knew this previously…

A friend of mine let me know she signed-up for a Medium membership using my link and I was so honored and appreciative that she wanted to support me and my writing dreams; however, her referral credit didn’t come through — I check my earning pretty regularly as I am so very excited and want to see which stories are performing well :)

I thought maybe it takes a couple/few days — which it does, but it still din’t show. So then I thought maybe my link wasn’t working correctly, but I checked it and it appeared to be working just fine … soooo what was it???!!!???

After some emails, which they were very friendly helpful and professional, I received this message which is a screenshot.

After-which, of course, I sent this screen shot to my friend along with a message saying I wish they would have told me this beforehand — although it is quite possible they did when I signed-up for the Partner Program. Not that it is likely a lot, but how many people have used my link to sign-up via mobile and this is what happened, and I have absolutely no idea and neither do the individuals who signed-up?!

Nothing against Medium, I love using this platform, but this does upset me a tad, because I had no idea to let people know to sign-up a specific way or else I wouldn’t receive the referral credit! As I said to my friend, it isn’t likely a lot, if any, but what if I missed a dozen referral sign-ups because of this! It might not be much for them or other top performers, but as someone starting out, that adds up pretty quickly!

Anywhooooo, I am sooo not trying to bash Medium, as I said I love this platform, everything it is offering me (as a medium member and reader, the community I have found, and numerous other reasons, along with being a part of the Partner Program), and how much it has already blessed me. I just thought I would share for others like me trying to build an audience and referral members, as well as for those signing-up as referred members (Make sure it is via the website and NOT the app).

To be completely fair, I am sure this information was provided to me previously, I just forgot or didn’t read it closely enough, or didn’t know where to look… That is once again, on me.

Thank you, I hope this helps you and I hope Medium understands I’m not trying to create a problem — it is likely I didn’t realize there would be a difference or where to find the details, that’s my bad. So here is to hopefully helping you avoid my pitfall of ignorance ;p

With all the Love, Grace, and hopes for a Better, Brighter, Happier and Healthier tomorrow, as well as to Your Health & Wellness, Happiness, and Well-being.
