Something to Look Forward to During the Lockdown Period
Forget doom and gloom for a minute and find something to lift your spirits.
I don’t know about you but I’ve had just about enough of hearing the words COVID-19.
Of course, I don’t mean to make light of the situation or to be insensitive towards the victims of this horrible pathogen sweeping the globe, my thoughts are with those directly and indirectly affected by it.
But after weeks of hearing about the pain and suffering of many, I think it’s important to find a way to boost your spirits, distract yourself — if even just for a few minutes — and to have something to look forward to in the near future.
For me, that solace has come from sports. Boxing in particular.
Now, I know what you might be thinking, “Haven't all sporting events been cancelled indefinitely as a result of the global pandemic that you’ve obviously heard about?”
And the answer to that is, yes, yes they have — #sad-face-emoji.
I’ve always been a boxing fan, but what has intrigued me about the sport recently is the manner in which promoters, fighters and sports journalists have been dealing with the current situation.
Every evening, once everyone else has gone to bed and I get my ‘me’ time, I kick back on the couch with my cup of tea and fire up YouTube, instantly searching for the latest news and interviews from the fight world.
And there’s been a lot.
With the world confined to the vicinity of their homes, there has been a flood of new content each day with everyone interviewing everyone else in an attempt to stay sane and keep things ticking over as best they can.
We are seeing some great one on one interviews between fighters, promoters and the boxing media.
Hearing how various personalities are holding up and dealing with the unusual change of pace to life, which has been forced upon them.
There have been talks of big fights and lots of them as soon as we come out the other side of this — the promoters at their work, as per usual.
And there have been fighters calling out other fighters via social media, aiming to captivate the fans while potentially setting themselves up for exciting bouts in the near future when things have calmed down and ‘normality’ — whatever that will be — is resumed.
But the thing I love most is despite these challenging times there’s an underlining positive vibe and a sense of community, comradery to be felt within each of these exchanges which has a knock-on effect for the viewer.
Watching these videos each night has me buzzing for the return of boxing, and for sport in general, they do a wonderful job of bringing a ray of sunshine to the dark days which we have all been experiencing as of late.
So, what have you been doing to boost your morale over the past few weeks?
You may not be into boxing or sports, but what are you looking forward to the return of most, once we overcome these challenging times?
