Something Freaky Is Happening!
A surreal morning
This morning I felt like I was in some Twilight Zone episode.
Some back story: In my recent story, Countdown Update, I talked about the first snow of the season and how the forecast for my town called for our first snow. Well, yesterday we got that snow. It snowed on and off all day with an accumulation of about an inch. The weather prognosticators were correct.
So this morning it got down into the Fahrenheit Teens.
I dug out my winter coat, shook it to get rid of any spiders, then bundled up to walk to the grocery store. I was out of lemons and I simply cannot live without lemons. (I needed a bunch of other stuff, too.)
It was during this walk for lemons that I found myself teleported to the aforementioned Twilight Zone episode. I had barely walked half a block when I stopped and looked all around me. Something freaky was happening!
There was absolutely NO WIND!
Looking all around me I realized that every single tree was dropping its leaves. And I don’t mean a few leaves being blown off the trees by a breeze. There was absolutely no wind! Yet the leaves were just falling off the trees — all the trees, not just certain kinds.
There was a thick circular carpet of leaves under every single tree and these carpets were getting thicker by the minute as leaves dropped steadily off the trees.
And they were almost all GREEN leaves!
I felt a jolt of panic. Judging by the unbelievable rate at which the leaves were falling from all the trees, I figured that within less than 48 hours the trees will be almost completely naked.
Wait! Stop! What about fall foliage? The leaves are not supposed to all fall immediately from the trees after the first big freeze. while they are still green. They are supposed to turn brilliant colors first and then be blown off the tree a few weeks later by a nice, cool autumn breeze.
This is my eighth autumn on the Great Plains of Turtle Island and I have never seen anything like this before. I have fond memories of the local fall foliage. I have never seen ALL the leaves fall at once like they were doing this morning.
With groceries put away, I look out my window and see that the massive leaf drop continues unabated. Most of the trees have lost around half their leaves — in a matter of just hours! WTF?
It looks like this year’s autumn isn’t even going to last a full week! Just like earlier this year when we went directly from winter to summer without much trace of spring, we are now going from summer directly to winter with an autumn that lasts only a few days. I want my autumn back!
I don’t like this. Can someone please fix it?
