Something Beautiful Almost Always Comes Out of Change

So relax into it and enjoy the ride

Two apps I use showcase quotes on their home screen.

One is brain.fm, and the other is Momentum.

One day, they both had a very similar quote:

Brain.fm:

Just when the caterpillar thought the world was ending, it turned into a butterfly. - Proverb

Momentum:

“What the caterpillar calls the end, the rest of the world calls a butterfly.” - Lao Tzu

Sometimes, things change so radically that it feels like the end of the world.

How do We Feel About Change?

Around 19 years ago, I attended a workshop at Sprint Telecom. I had just started working there.

One of the presenters talked about change. He drew a simple chart. It looked like this:

Drawing by the author

The stick figure on the left represents how things are now. The status quo. That’s if nothing changes. Everything stays the same.

The stick figure on the right is the end result of change. Life after the change.

The line below the stick figure that dips down and come back up on the right is your feeling about change while you’re going through it.

During the workshop, he had everyone get up and find another chair. That was how he introduced change.

Today, you can find all sorts of change. No need for a workshop.

Changes in politics.

Changes in your work.

Changes in your relationships.

Changes everywhere.

When change happens, we feel uncomfortable. That line starts to dip.

It does NOT feel good.

This is why people have a hard time changing. It’s hard to change. It creates a lot of emotional resistance.

Why should you have to get up from the chair you’re in? You’re comfortable. You like the view. You like the people you’re sitting with.

One person in the workshop even refused to get up!

Then, things get worse.

After you move, you realize the new chair you’re sitting on is set up differently and your feet don’t reach the ground. Or it creaks when you move. Or you don’t have the best view of the front of the room anymore.

Then, you start to notice some benefits. The line starts to go up.

This chair is adjustable, so you can get more comfortable! And look, you can see that gorgeous view out the window from here! Oh, and now you’re sitting next to your good friend!

Little by little, you start to feel better and better. Until, finally, you end up as the stick figure on the right. You’re in a much better place than you were before.

At least…it feels that way.

You have a new status quo.

Change is hard when all you think about is now.

This is why life coaches always have you think about the future.

They have you imagine you are already there. That you have already taken on the qualities of this changed person. Then, it’s much easier to get through the hard parts.

You can apply this theory to your personal goals if you like.

It’s hard NOT to take that piece of chocolate cheesecake…but if you consistently think of yourself in that changed position as a healthy, energized person, it’s easier.

Sometimes, you don’t know what’s on the other side of change.

You are the caterpillar, and you don’t know about the butterfly.

In those cases, change can be scary.

You might even feel like it’s the end of the world.

It very well may be the end of the world. For that caterpillar.

Relax into it.

Something beautiful will come out on the other side.
