Summary

Jessica Barnaby recounts the theft from her car, expressing mixed feelings about the incident where items were stolen without any visible damage to her vehicle.

Abstract

Jessica Barnaby experienced a car break-in where various items were stolen, including sunglasses, a picnic rug, torches, an umbrella, a medical kit, coins, and a Tracy Chapman CD. The thief managed to access the car without causing damage, leaving behind items like a muddy dog towel and CDs of country music and 60's summer hits. Despite the theft, Jessica is appreciative that her car was not damaged and reflects on a previous burglary experience. She also ponders the concept of petty theft and the potential impact of parents being held responsible for their children's criminal actions until the age of 40. Jessica had a premonition-like feeling the day before, prompting her to clear her car of valuables, which she now sees as fortunate given the subsequent theft.

Opinions

  • The author considers the theft of personal property by an adult not to be "petty" and reflects on the seriousness of the crime.
  • Jessica expresses gratitude that her car was not damaged during the break-in, acknowledging this as a positive aspect of the incident.
  • She questions societal norms regarding criminal responsibility, suggesting that extending parental responsibility could alter behavior.
  • The author believes in intuition or premonitions, as she felt compelled to remove items from her car the day before the theft occurred.
  • Jessica is somewhat sarcastic about the label "petty theft" and is contemplative about the broader implications of such crimes.
  • She is intrigued by the idea of predicting spooky coincidences and is open to learning more about intuition.

Someone Broke Into My Car Last Night

But I saw him coming (kind of)

Someone broke into my car last night and stole everything

Two pairs of sunglasses (one brand new), a picnic rug, two torches, an umbrella, a medical kit and a handful of coins. Gone.

They didn’t want the dog’s mud-covered towel though. Nor the country CD’s. Nor the summer hits of the 60’s. Perhaps they don’t have a CD player, I thought.

Then I saw Tracy Chapman was gone. The one with Subcity on it.

Someone broke into my car last night and didn’t damage a thing

The car locks automatically so I know they didn’t find it open.

They didn’t smash a window or scratch the paintwork. It’s not a keyless car, how did they get in?

They worked quietly a few feet from my house. They opened the boot, and closed it too, and my dog didn’t hear a thing.

Someone broke into my car last night and they call it petty theft

Petty theft is a six year old stealing sweets from his sister.

A grown adult targetting someone else’s property isn’t petty.

My place got burgled when I went on holiday. I was a student at the time in student accommodation and all there was to take was a microwave. Everyone knew who’d done it — a neighbour two doors down . No proof, no enchilada.

No subcity element, either. He owned his own house.

I’m grateful to last night’s thief for not damaging my car. That was nice.

But I do wonder, if parents had to take criminal responsibility for their child until said child was 40, how would that change things?

Something told me something would happen with my car last night

I’ve written before about spooky coincidences. Premonitions, perhaps.

Well, yesterday I had this need to empty the car of things that tend to get left in there over time: a toolset, sports equipment and picnic chairs. They’re all tucked away out of sight and the car’s parked within touching distance of my window. It’s all pretty cosy and the stuff’s been there for a good few months.

There was no reason for me to suddenly empty the car yesterday afternoon and yet that’s exactly what I found myself doing.

I’m so glad I listened to my intuition and cleared the car then. Before someone else did it for me.

Now. Who knows of an online course that teaches Predict-Spooky-Coincidence-on-Demand?
