Some Homeless People Just Need A Helping Hand

There should be more help available to them

Most people could never imagine a life of homelessness.

There are many individuals, groups, organizations, and government agencies trying to help the homeless escape that way of life. There are so many problems associated with homelessness that it is difficult to help all of the people who are unhoused in the United States.

While it may be true that there are those who do not want help and prefer that way of life, it does not seem like a likely path to choose. People would much prefer having a decent place to lay their head at night, food to eat, and a place to shower and clean up.

They may not like the rules and regulations required in homeless shelters, but living on the streets or in a small tent has to be undesirable, unsafe, and unsanitary.

Many people could use some help in the form of monetary assistance along with some kindness. It might help them get on their feet and live in some type of home again.

A story by Noah Sheidlower for Business Insider was titled: “A Denver basic-income program gave people up to $1,000 a month. One dad used it to find housing and support his kids, but without the program he went back to living in his car.”

Jarun Laws received $500 monthly payments and $6,500 upfront from the Denver Basic Income Project.

For a year, it allowed him to pay rent, more comfortably pay his bills, and spend time with family. He couldn’t afford rent anymore after the program, but he’s hopeful the extension will help him again.

Jarun Laws, 51, lives out of his car. It’s been his reality for almost a decade — and one he’s hoping to leave behind.

The Denver resident became homeless after losing his home and most of his belongings in 2012. He had a job to help pay for child support, car bills, and some expenses. He found temporary housing in 2020 which did not last.

The Denver Basic Income Project helped him in 2022 by giving him $500 a month for a year plus some upfront money. He was able to secure an apartment. The program ended last November, and he could not afford to maintain his apartment even though he was working two jobs. He is hoping the program will help him again since it was extended for six months.

The temporary guaranteed basic income programs have helped some in trying to improve their circumstances and not be homeless. It does not always give extended help which some need.

Money is needed to help the homeless. They need assistance with shelter, food, clothing, education, skills, and employment. There are some who may not be able to be helped because of special needs, but there must be thousands who would be very happy to escape that way of life.

Families and friends should help if possible. Some families are looking for family members that they suspect are homeless somewhere. People need to want to be helped and to accept it.

It has been reported that homelessness in the United States could be nearly wiped out with the help of a few billionaires who could afford to donate money to the cause.

The huge problem of homelessness continues. We could all help some by showing kindness and perhaps donating a little bit to keep them from going hungry if they are homeless.
