Summary

The article humorously discusses the challenges and benefits of embracing discomfort for personal growth, using examples like cold showers and exercising.

Abstract

The article, with a humorous tone, suggests that some discomfort, such as cold showers or exercising, can be beneficial for personal development. The author, Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, recounts a personal experience of attempting a cold shower, which was unpleasant but led to reflections on toughening up. The narrative includes a series of amusing mishaps, like tripping over a power cord and the struggle to turn off the heater, which inadvertently result in positive actions like exercising and saving power. The author also contemplates the idea of training a magpie to turn off the heater in exchange for mince, drawing a parallel between this and the challenges of adapting to weather changes. The article concludes with the author acknowledging the appeal of comfort but resolving to plan for a more resilient lifestyle, albeit with the possibility of postponing the effort.

Some Discomfort is Good For You.

“Toughen Up!”, yelled the TV health show!

Would someone give me the remote? Picture by John Rose.

Dr Mehmet Yildiz recommends cold showers, Tried that once turned my toes blue, Back to bed!

Annoying TV show yelling at me about toughening up, Would turn it off but remote near feet.

Should turn heater off, Save power but requires getting up and clicking switch, Coffee cold better get up, Tripped over power cord heater off, Saving power, Need some coffee, Goodness gracious no beans emergency shopping!

Son coming over, better do exercise weight lifting, He’ll ask about my walking, Off I go 6,000 steps, Get more coffee beans and more mince for magpie and crow, Perhaps get sunflower seed for screecher my cockatoo friend, Shopping never ends.

Done my walk, Done my exercises, Two cups of coffee, Now magpie wants mince flying pig, Thank goodness doesn’t like coffee, Maybe magpie can be trained to turn off heater?

What am I saying he’d want mince, Turn on heater magpie turns off wants more mince repeat and repeat until no more mince, Not falling for that routine like last time with light switch.

Lost the Plot

Poem should be extolling virtues of toughening up, Toss sedentary lifestyle get more in tune with weather changes, Enjoy being frigid in cold snaps, Love frying in heat waves, Turned on by bighting rain and sizzling lightning, Live in hope for sleet and hail, Swept away by flooded gutters, Well I’m up to it bring it on!

Maybe another cup of coffee, TV would be nice, I’ll just rest on comfy couch, Bit chilly need heater, Just plan my getting tough campaign for tomorrow, Planning’s tiring maybe a short nap?

Blessed be.
