Social Media Is Rotting My Brain
By Ryan J

Social media is rotting my brain and I think it’s time for a break from the chaos.
For the past few weeks, I’ve been stuck in lockdown (again) here in Sydney, Australia.
A lockdown caused by the new Delta variant of COVID-19 which is running amok throughout the state of New South Wales.
To keep myself sane I’ve spent most days going for walks in the park, playing with the kids in the garden, writing, drawing, watching movies and scrolling through social media — as you do.
For the most part, these activities have played a positive role in distracting me from the frustrations of a lockdown, as well as improving my mental and physical health.
However, when it comes to the latter (social media), well, that seems to be having the opposite effect.
Social media can be a real attack on the senses. Stream after stream of information blasted directly into your mind for every second spent online.
It can be an overwhelming experience with the potential to chip away at your mental stability, if you let it.
Anger. Aggression. Hate. Scaremongering. Fake news. Negativity. Manipulation. Contradictions. Misinformation.
It’s all there in abundance and it’s up to our tiny, inexperienced primal brains to decipher and make sense of it all. An impossible task to say the least.
At times I feel my head throbbing as I scroll through my newsfeed.
What’s real? What’s not? What am I supposed to believe? Who’s telling the truth?
So many questions unanswered. So much worry, doubt and angst.
But it doesn’t need to be this way, there’s really no need to endure such despair.
It’s time to take action.
So, in an attempt to salvage what’s left of my media-induced rotted brain I’ve decided to cut back on the needless scrolling through the shit show that is social media.
I’ve also decided to have a bit of a cleanout and unfollow/block/mute those accounts spouting the most bollocks — which are mainly news sites/profiles.
This way when I do slip up and have a cheeky peek — which will inevitably happen — at least I may not be subjected to as much nonsense as I have been over recent times and I won’t be coming away feeling depressed.
Every now and again in life, we need to take a step back and regroup.
For me, that means taking time away from such things as social media and directing my focus towards the people and activities that make me feel good.
So, if you’ve also been having a tough time in life as of late why not try something similar?
Take a look at the things which have been causing you the most stress and replace them with something that makes you happy.
You’ll likely find that the break will do you good it won’t take long for you to reset and start feeling like your regular old self again 😁.
