So You Wanna Take My Picture
A Story-Poem

So you wanna take my picture, mister? What do you see in these dark eyes? What do you see in this weathered face? Will your picture celebrate my journey? Will you document my successes and failures? The children I have given birth to? The men I have loved? The family that I have buried? Will you tell the whole story or only the part that strikes your fancy? Will you leave out the stories that you do not understand? Do you know why my back is hunched? Why my legs are tired? Do you know how many years I’ve walked this same path? This road to nowhere? Do I fascinate you, young man? Do you think there is wisdom in these eyes? Do you see the suffering in this wrinkled skin? Look at me closely before you snap that picture. Are you willing to face the truth that you will find in these wrinkles? Are you willing to question everything that you have been taught? To doubt your very existence? Then go ahead and snap that picture. Show the world what you have seen. Reveal the truth of my existence and the pain within my story. You will never forget me. I will be with you always— caught for a moment by your lens. I am now locked within your soul. You cannot escape.
