So When Will The Revolution Start?

Centuries ago, people would have started a revolution by now.

I caught up with an old friend this morning. You know the type that you don’t see in years and when you do reconnect, it’s as though you saw each other just yesterday? Well yes, that type of friend.

He asked what I thought of the current state of the world. It took me a while to respond because of the sheer craziness of stuff happening in the world right now. Sometimes I wonder if I am living in reality or in some type of a dystopian nightmare.

A Trump dynasty seems to be in the works

I mean think about it: for starters, let’s look at the surreal nature of the recent US Republican National Convention. What sticks out most is that picture of the Trump family all up there on stage. Tell me folks: when did America become a monarchy? Wasn’t the whole purpose behind the creation of the US, the fierce determination of freedom fighters for independence and liberation from the drudgery and authoritarianism of the English monarchy?

Wasn’t that the whole point of it’s all? So how come we’ve come full circle to what seems to be becoming a modern-day monarchy? Will my grandchildren learn about the ins and outs of the Trump dynasty in school? I hear Eric Trump is next in line for the throne followed by Ivanka. Oh my!

People sitting on the sidelines letting it happen

For me, a lifetime admirer of American democracy, this all looks and sounds way too surreal. Why did we even bother with democracy and human rights if it was all to end up with a soon to be an authoritarian state?

What’s more alarming are the people that are sitting on the sidelines watching this happen. Are they under some kind of spell? They seem completely stunned, unable to take any action while the basic tenets of America’s democracy are falling into shambles.

Revolutions used to happen

Really seriously, what are the American people doing? Centuries ago, there would have been a revolution. Remember the French and the Russian revolutions. Rulers got out of check, people got hungry, and boom, they rebelled. But maybe the main difference now is that people are not as hungry anymore.

Maybe Trump’s formula of keeping the big corporations happy, including the food conglomerates feeding poison by way of junk food to the masses is the actual trick to keeping a revolution at bay? So maybe the learning here is that the fatter the population, the less likely the chance for a revolution?

We need to save our democracy

Pardon my sense of humor, I’m just trying to understand why Trump is getting away with madness. But, I still have an inkling of hope. Maybe like all the wonderful Hollywood happy endings, the American film industry has trained me to expect in my half-century on earth, maybe the American people will give us a happy ending to the horrible nightmare of the last 4 years by electing Biden and Harris? Mind you, I’m not saying that the Biden-Harris combo is perfect, but at this point, anything goes to save our hard-fought-for democracy.

Another element of surreality in the world right now is this whole wave of Covid-19 deniers. Folks, whether you like it or not, we are living in the midst of a pandemic. Scientists are trying to figure out what this virus is about, how it behaves, and how we can cure it. Yet, I hear and read people say that Covid-19 is the invention of a sinister cabal headed by Bill Gates and consorts. I mean really folks? More than 800 000 people around the world have died of Covid-19. Families are suffering, and have lost their loved ones. It is real!

Covid-19 does exist folks

Scientists have confirmed over and over again that this thing wasn’t made in a lab. It’s real, it’s devious and it’s dangerous. So why, why are millions choosing to believe it doesn’t exist. And why are those who do believe it does exist say that they will not take the vaccine if and when it becomes available? I mean, all this is next level surreal. Where the hell is the world going?

And then finally, the whole story around Alexei Navalny. Like really, the Russians poisoned him because he spoke up against Vladimir Putin? So this is where we are at right now? Speak and you’ll get killed? Not that Russia has ever been kind to the opponents of its political regime, but the blatant and summary execution of its critics, now that’s truly shocking.

The Handmaid’s Tale is not as unrealistic as we may think

So yeah, just a collection of my thoughts as I navigate this crazy world right now. I am what people consider a mentally agile person, but I am having trouble adapting to this new world. I have enjoyed the benefits of democracy for far too long to know that it is something that we — the world cannot afford to lose. We should immediately stop tampering with it — the dystopian world of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale or George Orwell’s 1984 aren’t as unrealistic as we may think given the current climate.

There are much fewer monarchies in the world today than at the turn of the century. There is a reason for that — monarchies are led by generations of inbred, dysfunctional relatives. They are devoid of any form of diversity, they are fascist and authoritarian. This is not — pardon this was never what the world needed.

A small virus can wipe us out folks…

On Covid-19, we need to realize that as human beings we are vulnerable. A small virus can wipe us all out. No one quite knows for sure what happened to the dinosaurs. Maybe it was a virus, a bacteria or parasite that erased them completely. Let us listen to our science, let us listen to facts, and find a therapy for Covid-19, while also preparing for the next pandemic.

And whereas it comes to Russia, the world needs to hold that country accountable. Governments can’t just go around killing people because those people criticize them. The Russias and the Saudia Arabia’s of the world cannot execute people in all impunity while the world looks on. What separates the human race from animals if we simply kill each other when we disagree?

We need to fight with the passion of a million lions to preserve democracy

So while I am strongly involved in the antiracism movement, I also believe that we need to mobilize the world into another movement that should run alongside antiracism. This movement will be one to uphold and maintain democracy. We need to fight with an incandescent passion to keep democracy alive — freedom of expression is essential to human beings like is food, water, and oxygen. We need to fight with the passion and energy of a million lions to keep it alive — forever.

Somehow I think umair haque will agree with me on the Trump part of this.

Thanks everyone for reading my perspective.
