Snooze Button Sam
On the set of a sitcom
“And action!”
Sam went through the door and entered the room where the other six actors were in conversation. They all stopped talking and looked at Sam as Sam delivered some news in a very funny way. All the other actors laughed. Sam then sat on the couch between two other actors. Conversation resumed with every other line being a hilarious joke.
Sam was a talented actor who was part of an ensemble cast of comedic actors working on a popular sitcom. The show was in its sixth season and all the actors had become like a family. Sam loved being on the set with his friends. He and the others had too much fun to call it work.
The scene continued, filled with continuous laughter and physical comedy as the audience laughed uproariously.
Suddenly, very loud alarms went off.
“And cut! What the hell is that?” yelled the director.
All the actors on stage were now looking at Sam as they covered their ears.
“Sorry guys. I’m so sorry. I’ll take care of that. I’ll be right back. Don’t go anywhere.”
Sam left the stage and in a quick minute the alarms stopped. He was swiftly back on stage although he was a bit disoriented. He wasn’t sure where in the scene they were and he could not remember his lines.”
“Places everyone! And action!”
Sam wandered around the stage, not sure where he was supposed to be or who he was supposed to be talking to. The audience was no longer laughing as the cast members seemed to also wander around aimlessly. Sam tried desperately to get into character and resume the scene but the alarms had muddled his mind.
It was the last scene to be shot and there was a cast party after the taping. The cast members not only worked together but hung out together after the show. Sam was really looking forward to the party.
After a few moments the ear-piercing alarms went off again.
“And cut!”
Barely opening his eyes, Sam reached over and hit the snooze button on his alarm one more time. He then closed his eyes and buried himself deeply into his pillow. He tried to go back to the stage at the studio but he could not find it. It was gone and so were all the actors. He squeezed his eyes tighter to try to bring them back but they had vanished into thin air.
When his alarm went off again Sam fully opened his eyes and sat up in bed. After turning off the alarm he got up into the eerie quiet and darkness of his apartment. He was suddenly all alone. There was no applause, no laughter, no words spoken, no action. There was nothing but looming stillness.
Sam suddenly missed his actor friends very much.
