Snoop Dogg’s Mom Had Octuplets From Two Different Fathers
A strange phenomenon likely on the rise, research says.

This is a weird one.
When we first met who would come to be known as Snoop Dogg he looked completely different from his siblings.
For one, he was black. Sleepy-eyed like a stoner, hence the name. With a white chest and paws like a penguin with socks, and timid as they come. Most of his brothers were brown and friendly, jumping all over me and licking me to get my attention.
Why was Snoop so different?
After enquiring a bit, I found out that his momma, a tiny Jack Russell-type rat dog, had been frisky not with one but two dogs — a huge German Shepard and a gentle Border Collie — when she was on heat.
The result?
She got pregnant from both!

This is quite common in dogs and cats, explains one Donald Shellenberger, Veterinarian of VCA Smoketown Animal Hospital in Pennsylvania. Because when they’re unsupervised and on heat they love a cheeky orgy. Nice.
But here’s the kicker.
This phenomenon can and does happen in humans too.
😱
The Sciency Bit
Remember when you were at school and the teacher said “women ovulate once a month, releasing one egg, so you get one shot at fertilisation”…?
Well, she was wrong.
Women, for whatever reason, can release two eggs within minutes of each other or even a few days apart in each menstrual cycle.
WHAT!?
Now picture she’s had sex with Man #1, the egg begins the journey down the Fallopian tube and surprise! it finds some sperm alive and kicking — because don’t forget sperm can live for a few days inside the female reproductive tract — and boom. She might get pregnant.
But she doesn’t know that yet and goes on to have sex with Man #2. Precisely the month she’s released a second egg. And boom, now she’s pregnant with fraternal twins.
What are the odds?
Some studies from the 90s (hello? Science? It’s the future. Update your stats, please?) say 1/400 and others make it as rare as 1/13,000. But it’s hard to get an accurate number because who’d suspect twins would have different dads? I had no idea this was even possible! And the truth only comes to light when people ask for paternity tests like this lady in New Jersey or this mom of Brazilian twins.
Why would this be happening more and more?
Researchers think it may have to do with assistive reproductive technologies, ovulation induction, people’s sexual liberation and other factors. But maybe it’s just because more people are doing paternity tests since the technology exists now.
If you care about the specific name for this ever more common phenomenon, scientists have called it Heteropaternal Superfectundation. Or in plain English: Two dads + one mom = one set of twins.
Explain that to the new fathers to be. I can picture the three people at her place over steaming cups of tea discussing what the hell happened. At least it would make for a good comedy show.
When did life get so fascinating and complicated?
