Summary

Abstract

"Snap: Part I" is a piece of flash fiction that captures a poignant moment between two former lovers who shared a profound connection during a spring break a decade prior. The narrative unfolds on a beach where they first met, and after years of silence, they reconnect through an email that downplays the significance of their meeting, insisting it's not a "date date." The woman arrives searching for the youthful version of her companion, unaware of the changes time has wrought on him, including a scar that now marks his identity. Her nostalgia for their shared past is palpable, as she yearns for the days before an unspecified accident altered their lives. The man, concealed under a floppy hat, captures a final photograph before he presumably reveals a life-changing truth to her. The story ends with an invitation to follow the author on social media and a teaser for the upcoming "Part 2."

Ten spring breaks ago, we collided on this stretch of sand, followed by scorching heat and sharing secrets.

A decade of silence followed by an email asking for a date. “But not a date date,” she wrote.

She glides by searching for my younger version, ignoring the scarred man hidden under a floppy hat. Her anxiety is scanning the boardwalk for a glimpse of her lost love. Out of boredom, she longed for the days before the accident.

An apology is the reason for this reunion. I snap one last photo before her world, as she once knew it, ends.
