Small Towns Really Are Best

After a day in the big city

Every winter I take the train to Chicago and spend a day. I line up early to get into the German Christmas market and walk away with very overpriced but sumptuous strudels and German candy. Then I walk to Macy’s to check out the store and take a picture of the tree inside. This year the tree was lovely, decorated in my favorite color blue.

Walking up Michigan Avenue, I enjoyed the hustle and bustle of thousands of people walking and hundreds of cars whizzing by me. I always stop by the river. This year the sun was shining, sparkling on the blue radiance of the water. Trump may be controversial, but his tower right on the water looked spectacular, gleaming in the sun.

My next stop was Water Tower Place. I love this place in winter with its lovely Christmas decorations. I didn’t stay too long here since I was headed to the Cheesecake Factory to meet a friend for lunch.

We both had the salmon and enjoyed the view from our window seat. Then we lined up at the front counter to buy some cheesecake. We always joke that we spend about $25 on lunch and then another $40 on cheesecake. — But it’s worth every penny.

As I traveled home on the train, I thought about how nice it would be to live in a big city. However, when I came home to my house in my small town, I closed the door with a sense of relief.

It was so quiet here, no cars honking or other loud city noises. Around me only trusted neighbors and the feeling of comfort and neighborhood. I didn’t need a train to get around or drive in the crazy Chicago traffic. (The last time I drove in Chicago, a passing car was so close that it almost touched my car’s fender.)

Small towns with access to a big city are best. I can live in quiet, peaceful surroundings yet experience big-city life whenever I wish.

Wherever you may stay during this holiday season and beyond, I hope that you are comfortable there and enjoy every day of your life!
