Small Recorder with Big Benefits

Review of the Tascam DR 10L Micro Portable Audio Recorder

Recently we purchased a Tascam DR 10L micro portable audio recorder. Jerry Clement, my husband, business partner, and videographer, loves it. Here’s the review he shared:

We purchased this Tascam DR 10L recorder for two primary reasons:

(1) We already had a black one, really liked it, and needed another one for interviews and other such situations.

(2) B&H Photo had a special price in their “Deal Zone.”

But even without the special price, the DR 10L is worth it, and here are the reasons:

· It’s a recorder instead of a wireless mic. Wireless mics are great, but they tend to be very expensive, and they are subject to interference. The DR 10L records excellent quality audio, without interference (bit depth 16/24; bit rates up to 192 kb/s; sample rates 44.1/48 kHz in BWF, MP3, and WAV formats). And the audio tracks are easy to sync up to the video track in post-production editing.

· The unit has a small form factor allowing the talent to hide it comfortably in clothing so that only the microphone shows. And even the mic can be obscured by taping it under a lapel or collar or just inside the shirt.

· The DR 10L operates on one AAA battery for about 10 hours, making it very inexpensive to operate.

· The 3.5mm mic input jack locks positively into the recorder unit with a locking nut, so there is no worry about the mic becoming dislodged during even the most vigorous activity.

· The unit has a dual track recording feature that allows you to record at a preferred level with a second safety track being recorded at a lower level in case any loud noise might blow out the primary track. It also has an automatic gain limiter if you prefer to go that route.

· Audio files close automatically on power loss preventing the loss of data.

· Placing the unit in record mode disables all the other buttons so that even the most fidgety talent cannot disrupt the recording.

· The DR 10L supports micro SD/micro SDHC cards with capacity of up to 2GB providing plenty of record time without replacement.

The Tascam DR 10L is perfect for interviews, presentations, weddings (black & white), vlogs, or any other application where you need high-quality audio recorded in an unobtrusive way. If you are looking for a solution to one of these challenges, I recommend the Tascam DR10L highly.

We did an unboxing video of it. You can watch it here to see how cool this little recorder is:
