Small business owners need an inbound marketing strategy

Pixabay

Having been self-employed for all of my adult life, I happen to have learned a few things.

Many small business owners spend their lives:

  • Chasing after all their customers
  • Waiting for the customer to magically find them

Neither of these work in the long term.

There is a smarter way.

Previously I wrote about taking a holistic approach, which still rings true. You must look at all aspects of your business equally and holistically.

The smartest marketing strategy is an inbound one.

Now I am not saying don’t go looking for new customers/clients, but you need to have an inbound strategy to compliment your efforts.

An inbound strategy is one where you have created an opportunity for people to find you, and you are not just waiting for them to magically find you.

Create a list of goals that you can work on today to improve your online and offline small business reach.

Here are some goals for you to get started on

Marketing goal — Create an online search presence

SEO — Search engine optimisation is the base for all your other strategies working well online.

More than 90% of people use Google search to find the products and services they are looking for.

SEO ensures that your website is optimised so that Google will index it better in the search results for what you have on offer.

It is something you can learn and do yourself if you are so inclined, or you can outsource to a professional.

Marketing goal — Drive traffic, generate leads and gain greater visibility online.

Content marketing includes blogs, videos, social media posts, podcasts, webinars, etc.

Any content you can create and distribute online falls into the content marketing category.

The content you add to your website can be optimised for the search results (SEO) to ensure that your website appears in the search results.

Marketing goal — Generate leads or sales in a hurry and raise your profile quickly.

Google Ads or pay-per-click ads (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc.) are the most efficient way to achieve results quickly.

Note: A combination of Google Ads and social media ads can provide some of the best results.

Marketing goal — Build engagement and form relationships

Social media provides us with the opportunity for social marketing.

Choosing two or three popular social platforms with your ideal customers/clients will provide the best results.

Being consistent by posting daily and ensuring that you provide relevant information will give your business the best chance of being seen by more people.

Marketing goal — Stay in touch with current and past clients

Email marketing is the most cost-effective and efficient way to connect with your database.

Creating consistent email contact with your database keeps you top of mind when they need what you are offering.
