Slow Thinking In A Fast World

How to slow down and succeed

The world is moving forward at hyper-speed.

New insights and technology breakthroughs emerge daily. Our digital and virtual world can allow us to be nearly anywhere at any time today.

We can begin to believe that all that we do needs to be done quickly and that it is the only way to stay ahead.

However, we are built to go slow at times. Slow thinking is the antidote to an accelerated world.

Lesson to Learn

Despite the speed of the world around us, we are not built for continued acceleration.

We need to develop a capacity for slowing down our thinking and decision-making processes to act appropriately.

Slow thinking allows us to gather the required information and insights needed to make the best decisions.

We must learn to slow down and give others the time to make intelligent and thoughtful decisions.

Answer for Me

It is easy to get sped up today. Everything around us feels like it is moving quickly.

We don’t want to get left behind. However, taking the time to assess the situation is something I remind myself is vitally important.

I do not want to move more quickly than each situation warrants. I let others take the time they need to be thoughtful in their decision-making. I like the best decisions and actions, not the quickest.

Building in periods of reflection and review is another way to foster slow thinking. When I pause and review the situation, I get a chance to look deeper into the issue and evaluate my decisions’ consequences.

Spending time on a vital topic requires putting aside distractions from a fast-paced world to focus. This kind of activity pays dividends in better decision-making.

Action

Take the time to pause and determine what is essential.

Slow down your thinking so that good information gathering and analysis can follow. Don’t let the world speed you up.

Not everything we do needs to be done quickly. Pause and reflect.

Give others the same permission to take their time on the decisions that are game-changing.

Daily Actions

Find times to slow down and assess your current situation each day.

The world will move quickly but take the time to move deliberately in a controlled manner.

What areas could benefit from slow thinking and more analysis?

What decisions seem rushed?

Can you adjust the timeframe to give you and others the time needed to do a more thorough review?

Slow thinking in a fast world is needed now more than ever.
