Slip Ups

All of our mistakes led to this

I told Tony, right before we escaped, that we had to ensure that the plan we’d made was iron clad. He assured me that I had nothing to worry about, so as soon as the sun descended behind the clouds, we made our escape.

We went quietly down the stairs and eased the locks from the front door. We knew the minute that the door opened the alarm would go off. “Did you bring the gum?” I asked. Tony, pulled it from his pockets and handed me two pieces. I chewed on the pieces quickly, and slid them between the alarm sensor and the door, just like we were told to do. That would hold the sensor in place long enough for us to get away.

As I opened the door, I found myself panting like a dog that hadn’t had water for weeks. I was so afraid of what would happen if they caught us, but we had to go. As I went to close the door, I realized Tony slipped up.

I told him to buy sugar free gum since the gum with sugar in it, didn’t stick to surfaces well. As soon as the door began to close, the gum slipped off the sensor and the alarm rang out.

We ran like our asses were on fire. We were to be picked up 2 blocks away. I ran past Tony within 30 seconds of us taking off. As I passed the first block, I looked up to see slip up number two. Tony, was so nervous about our escape, he forgot to put on his running shoes. Instead, he was trying to run in his house slippers. He was getting too far behind.

I turned around to get him, but I knew we needed to get away from here as fast as we could. They’d be coming and if they saw us, it would all be over. I reached Tony quickly and grabbed his arm. Then I thought, I felt something on my hand, trying to pull me back. I looked down at my hand, but it was too dark to see. So I ran as hard as I could. Tony felt like dead weight, but we were almost there.

When we got to the second block, I saw the dark green Range Rover. Tony was right, it was a beautiful car and I couldn’t wait to get in and get away from this place. I felt a strange feeling come over me and then something pulling me back, but I was having none of that. As soon as we got close to the car, Tony pulled on the car handle and the back door opened.

Tony and I jumped inside the car and the car pulled off.

We looked back, just in time to see our parents running full speed towards the Range Rover, but there was no way they were going to catch us. I almost thought I heard my mother screaming, but I didn’t care. Tony and I were free and there was nothing they could do about it.

“See, Dana, I told you they wouldn’t catch us. Big Bob, came to get us just like he promised.” Tony said. Bob turned around and smiled at both of us, but winked his eye at me. As he turned back around, I heard what sounded like a scream inside of my head. That’s when I started to take a look around the Range Rover.

First, I realized that there was no handles on the inside of the car. I looked down and saw what appeared to be chains by my feet and one just above my headrest.

Then, I looked over at Tony, seemed to realize this slip up as well.

All the while that Big Bob had been coming around their school, telling the kids that if they were getting whippings or punished by their parents for doing things that were just by nature the way of children, they had bad parents. He said anyone who wanted to escape the abuse, he’d help them to get away and never see their parents again.

After we got into trouble for sneaking out of the house and grounded for 2 weeks with no cell phones or video games, Tony and I had enough and he placed the call to Big Bob for help.

I guess we both slipped up, because we didn’t want to listen to our parents or get in any more trouble for doing the things we thought every kid was doing. That’s what Bob said.

But, I think Big Bob was wrong about our parents, but right about his promise.

Tony and I never saw our parents again.
