Summary

Maddy, a disillusioned accountant, rediscovers her passion for music and her dream of changing the world through songs after encountering a muse named Melody in a music store.

Abstract

The narrative "Sleeping Dreams" is a piece of flash fiction that intertwines Greek mythology with contemporary life. It follows Maddy, an accountant who feels disconnected from her dreams, as she is sent on a mundane errand for doughnuts and coffee. Her attention is captured by a rainbow in a music store window, leading her to enter the store where she is drawn to a guitar. This moment sparks a forgotten dream of impacting the world through music. Maddy's interaction with Melody, who introduces herself as Maddy's muse, suggests a supernatural influence guiding her back to her passion. The story is inspired by Jacqueline Dacres' "Hold on to Your Dreams," emphasizing the importance of maintaining one's aspirations.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that dreams can be reawakened even when one is immersed in a life that seems to stifle them.
  • The presence of a muse, Melody, implies that external inspiration can play a pivotal role in rekindling lost passions.
  • The story conveys a message that the modern world, with its distractions and routines, can dull one's connection to their true calling, which requires active effort to rediscover.
  • The narrative encourages readers to reflect on their own dreams and consider the possibility of reviving them, regardless of current circumstances.
  • It is implied that art, specifically music in this context, has the power to change the world and that this belief is worth holding onto.

Maddy followed the hustle of the city. Her accounting firm volunteered her for a doughnut and coffee run. The job paid well, but numbness lived in her soul.

A rainbow caught her eye in the music store window. She slowed her pace. Without thinking, she entered the store. The guitar called to her as she inspected its stunning paint job.

“Do you play?”

“Oh, no… I… I mean I used to… in school.”

How could she forget her dream? Change the world one song at a time…

The shop assistant offered her a paint-stained hand. “I’m Melody, your muse. And we have a mission — one song at a time.”

Inspired by Jacqueline Dacres. Her story “Hold on to Your Dreams” stayed in my psyche and The Muse regurgitated. Fantastic read.
