Skydiving 101: A Beginner's Journey to the Sky

From Fear to Freedom: Soaring High in the Sky — My Skydiving Story

That's me in the sky with my instructor.

Last year, I made an impromptu trip to Thailand. With a sole purpose in mind: to experience the thrill of skydiving. I had been drawn to the idea for quite some time, and this was the perfect moment to make it a reality.

I decided on Thailand because it has the cheapest skydiving centres in Asia. And with nothing planned, I reached the beautiful city of Pattaya, Thailand. All I knew was that this is where you can go skydiving.

A day before the scheduled jump, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness, wondering if I might chicken out at the last minute.

Not gonna lie. I was nervous and downright scared.

Somehow, I convinced myself with a determined inner voice: "This is the time. You have to do it now, or you may never get this chance again. You can do it!"

My heart raced, and before I knew it, I was signing up for a tandem dive. And poof, I signed up. Now I knew for sure I was doing this; there's no going back now. Even when I was getting ready, my heart was pounding really fast. But with a sense of purpose, I got into my jumpsuit and wore the goggles to shield my eyes. As I climbed onto the plane, my instructor's presence put me at ease; he was a really sweet guy and was continuously talking to me to make me comfortable.

Then the plane ascended, and Pattaya's remarkable beauty unveiled itself from a point I had never imagined to see. The lush landscape, sandy beaches and glittering sea before us all in one frame.

When we reached the designated altitude, it was time to make the jump.

Then the famous words came: "3, 2, 1, jump!" and we were freefalling. I have never felt more adrenaline rush; that was truly an electrifying moment. We did the jump from the height of 13,000 ft.

In 300 seconds of freefall, I discovered that life’s most electrifying moments are the ones unplanned.

The moment that confirmed Earth is indeed round :)

Touching down on the ground, I felt a deep sense of accomplishment. My not-so-well-planned trip to skydive in Pattaya gave me an adrenaline rush and an appreciation for the beauty of life and the importance of pursuing our dreams.

A few pointers from the experience:

  • You don't have to book anything in advance; you can phone the centre a day before and book a slot.
  • I chose Thai Sky Adventures for this, one of the top-rated centres in Thailand.
  • On Tandem Sky Diving, you can do a freefall jump attached to a highly experienced sky dive instructor.
  • It will cost you nearly 8000 Thai Baht (220 USD) in Thailand.

Little did I know that my impromptu plan would teach me a lifelong lesson: the importance of embracing spontaneity and living in the moment. I discovered that some of life’s most remarkable experiences are born from stepping outside our comfort zone and seizing the unexpected opportunities that come our way.
