Beauty and Self-love
Love Yourself: A Rant
What is it with fairer skin?
What makes a dark,
beautiful woman set on having lighter, fairer skin?
Does she despise her Nubian roots?
Does she not know that she is exotic and rare?
Why does she not love the person in the mirror?
What makes her despise her own reflection?
They say ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’
I say ‘Beauty begins with loving You’
Love what you behold in the mirror
Love it fiercely because only then will you understand your own worth

I recently saw a trending video clip of a new bleaching technique. In the video, a woman undergoing the said procedure is half immersed in some sort of bubbly liquid bath while another person appears to be scrapping off her top skin revealing fairer skin. A moderator is heard describing the procedure, its ease, and its affordable cost.
This made me pause and ponder. The above poem is the result of my ‘musing’. Why do women go to such lengths to lighten their skin? Dark toned women seek to be lighter-toned and lighter-toned women seek to be fair-skinned. Why don’t they love their own skin? Why is it so important?
I cannot answer any of the above questions but I have read some postulations on the possible reason and they include the following
- Fair skin makes them more attractive to the opposite sex
- Fair-skinned women get more notice
- Fair-skinned women get more job opportunities in professions that require high visibility like television, music, acting, modeling and so on
I can neither support nor oppose any of the above views because I have not had any experiences in this regard. What I aim to highlight is the fact that we (especially women) should practice self-love and self-affirmation.
I remember a time when my younger self thought that Lauren Hill and Alicia Keys were the most beautiful women in the world. I do not know why. Sometimes when I really think about it, I find myself wondering, ‘What made me think that way’. Apart from the fact that they are both strong, beautiful black women and amazing musicians, I knew precious little else about them.
But really Ladies we need to love our own skin. We need to look in the mirror and affirm ourselves every single day. We need to drown out the lies fed by others, TV commercials, social media and glossy magazines that we must be 7 feet tall, a size 8, have a high waist, an angular face, a particular arrangement or size of eyes, nose, and mouth, parted thighs, perky breasts, pouting lips. The list goes on.
Self-Affirmation and Self Love. Let this be the new mantra.
N/B: I do not know what to call this piece — poetry, prose, rant, or essay but if it resonates with you, christen it with any name you please. Would love to hear your thoughts though
