Sketching For Writers

I found a new skill

You may already do this. It requires no artistic talent. It can be as simple as scribbling notes on a scrap of paper about an idea. If you’re like me, you have a collection of notebooks you use to sketch your writing ideas. It's nice to see your handwriting on a page rather than pixels on a screen in black and white.

I also sketch ideas here on Medium. I have let go of the idea that every story or poem has to be completed in any certain timeframe. I will “sketch” out a few thoughts to start and perhaps write notes to work with in one of those ubiquitous notebooks. This way I usually have something that needs work, and I can do it when the mood strikes me.

Many writers will “sketch” an outline for a story. It’s a great way to get started, and sometimes that is the hardest part.

Sketching is fun. You should try it!
