FICTION READING GUIDE

Skeletons in the Closet — A Serial Fiction

Table of contents and introduction to my serial fiction

Nyra and Keegan probably wish they followed these guys’ example — Photo by Chris Charles on Unsplash

A lot of people have skeletons in the closet. In the case of one man, that isn’t just a figure of speech.

Welcome to my serial fiction “Skeletons in the Closet”. In this guide, I provide an overview of the story and a table of contents. In the end, I also hand out some digital flower bouquets as a sign of gratitude.

Introduction to Skeletons in the Closet

In this spooky urban fantasy story, we follow two journalists — Nyra and Keegan — investigating the corrupt politician Theobald Killjoy. Nyra and Keegan realise very early that they are far out of their depth when their investigation of a lifetime leads them straight into the arms of the Grim Reaper.

Table of contents — What has happened so far?

Here are the currently available chapters. I will update the table of contents as soon as new chapters appear.

№1 — The Investigation

The story starts with an unlucky investigation.

№2 — Mastering Death

We get more insights into the mysterious man Theobald Killjoy.

№3 — Something Lurks in the Night

Killjoy hates people messing with his affairs. Being who he is, vicious murder tops Killjoy’s list of solutions to the problem called Nyra.

Chapter №4 —Addressing the Assembly

Theobald Killjoy gives a speech in front of the assembly, revealing his background and agenda.

Chapter №5 — Angry Spirits

A man visits an abandoned town in search of a long-forgotten secret.

Chapter №6 — The Secret (working title)

Ooooh! A secret!

Prologue (working title)

In this instalment, I will shine some light on Nyra and Keegan and why they investigate Killjoy. I never covered that in the original flash fiction.

The kinks in Skeletons in the Closet

When I wrote №1 of this storyline, I didn’t plan to write a serial fiction but just one humorous and slightly spooky flash fiction in response to a writing prompt. As it happens pretty often, I couldn’t let those characters go. Skeletons in the Closet has a few weaknesses, like the clumsy break-in in chapter 1.

More importantly, this story never properly introduced the characters and the reasons why Nyra and Keegan investigate Killjoy in the first place. I plan to fill that gap with a prologue soon.

I promised flowers

This leads to another critical point to address: expressing gratitude for feedback and motivating words or publishing this story in their pub. I listed you guys in the order that you appeared in the comments to the story, and I hope I didn’t forget anyone.

But before you wonderful writers get your flowers, here are my special thanks to Christine Graves, who inspired this tale (and many more of my stories) with one of her fantastic writing prompts. You can find some of her prompts in her pub Enticing the Muse.

Zane Dickens, Eko BP, Angie Mangino, Mary Louisa Cappelli, MFA, JD, PhD, FJCMontenegro, JF Danskin, Bernie Pullen, C.A. Jaymes, Klara Jane Holloway, Mike Butler, Scot Butwell, Denise Darby, Maria Rattray, Ravyne Hawke, Bradan Writes Stories, Kayla Tackett, and Cathylouise.

Special thanks also to David Perlmutter, who read almost every one of my stories. Your highlighting is part of my review process, and I always take it as an opportunity to consider why you might have liked a (couple of) sentence(s). It is fun to review my work by looking at highlights (yours or others) and trying to figure out (or just imagine) why readers might have liked a particular part.

Okay. Okay! Finally, here are your flowers. :)
