#6: Embrace Failure

Despite what many people think, not everyone can be an entrepreneur.

There is a pressuring move towards becoming self-employed and being your own boss, which is amazing on a personal and economic level. However, before we all jump on the entrepreneurship bandwagon, we need to know what we are getting ourselves into.

Our biggest problem is the fact that not much emphasis is placed on the skills that make up a successful entrepreneur, which leads to many cases of failed or struggling entrepreneurs.

“If you want to be an entrepreneur, it’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle. It defines you. Forget about vacations, about going home at 6 pm — last thing at night you’ll send emails, first thing in the morning you’ll read emails, and you’’ wake up in the middle of the night. But it’s hugely rewarding as you’re fulfilling something for yourself.” -Niklas Zennstrom, founder Skype and Kazaa

Top Six Skills For Successful Entrepreneurship

In a recent article I came across titled ‘Six Skills That Take Time To Master But Pay Off Forever’, the author, Lauren Uppink talked about the importance of adopting a holistic approach to productivity and career success.

Lauren interviewed previous successful TEDxCapeTown speakers who consisted of lawyers, psychologists, and writers. She asked them about their opinions on what skills took them the longest to learn.

Despite what we may have expected, they all highlighted the need to implement a common holistic approach that understood the importance of curiosity, the need to slow down, and kindness in order to be successful.

Self-care

A simple self-care routine is a critical part of having and maintaining a successful career. Although we are bombarded with guidance on the importance of hustle and working too hard, yet we tend to neglect the importance of taking time to care for ourselves and refuel our energy so we will in turn be more productive and happier in our careers.

As the saying goes, you cannot fill from an empty cup.

It is important to remember to replenish your mental, emotional, and physical stores and recharge your batteries so you can avoid burnout.

The article quotes the author Malcolm Gladwell who spread the concept that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become a world-class master in your field.

Although this may be true as consistent practice is needed in order to master a specific skill, yet it needs to be taken with care and with the implementation of self-care and regular breaks in order to give both the mind and body a break and avoid exertion.

Avoid the need to rush

The need to race through tasks with speed is detrimental to the productivity and accuracy of your work. It also elevates the stress levels when you feel the need to rush through certain tasks in order to complete them within a given deadline.

Pressure is part of life, but the need to exert tremendous pressure on yourself isn’t very wise for maintaining and boosting career success.

Instead, work at a slower pace and prioritize the tasks based on importance. Break up the tasks into smaller doable mini-tasks that are easily accomplishable.

Working mothers are more likely to feel rushed as they take on multiple responsibilities.

Learning to speak up

The ability to clearly communicate and advocate for your rights at the right time is important in order to feel and be heard. Don’t fear the judgment of others and stand up to what you believe in as you are an integral part of the success of the workplace and you deserve to be heard and acknowledged.

Curiosity

Curiosity is a key skill that needs to be mastered in order to be successful as an entrepreneur. It opens the doors to opportunities and ideas and allows room for constant positive improvement.

Be curious like a child and strive to find answers that quench your thirst for knowledge.

Channel kindness and power

Effective channeling of power and kindness are some of the best skills you can learn and master in order to be a positive and productive person. This is a skill that is very much needed in today’s society and workplace environment.

What makes us human is the ability to portray empathy, understanding, and be fair despite the obstacles.

Have the courage to fail

View failure as a way to learn from your mistakes and grow as a person. The struggle shouldn’t be viewed as the enemy since the struggle is what builds us and strengthens our core values.

By getting yourself out of your comfort zone, do you grow and enrich your soul and experience.

Disclaimer:

If you find yourself lacking in one or more of the skills outlined below, it does not necessarily mean you will/are not a successful entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship is a subjective talent that is based on different factors, it cannot be simply measured.

However, these skills are the core foundation of the personality of a successful entrepreneur.

If you find yourself lacking in one or more elements, work on strengthening that skill so you are better equipped for a successful journey. There is always room for improvement, especially when it comes to personal growth.

We all grow at different paces and entrepreneurship is no exception.
