Six Engaging YouTube Channels about Religion

After I decided to learn more worldwide religions in more depth, YouTube proved to have stunning options. I’m listing six channels I’ve found useful that you can use to increase your knowledge too.

  1. Let’s Talk Religion

While it includes some short videos, this channel also offers many longer and more detailed ones. I love that it includes numerous religions that don’t always get coverage elsewhere such as Sikhism and Jainism while still providing introductions to more mainstream faiths. The videos contain lists for further reading. It’s great that these suggestions are mostly books. When channels recommend scholarly articles, those are great and the most current resources, but not everyone can access databases that include them, especially people who aren’t students and don’t work in academia. The books are easier for more people to get ahold of. The creator has a series on this channel called “Religious Texts” in which he reads and provides brief contextual material for religious writings; beautiful illustrations accompany these readings.

2. Religion for Breakfast

While similar to Let’s Talk Religion, Religion for Breakfast also has quite a few more specific videos such as “What is the History of Magic Wands?” and “The 3 Wise Men: Ancient Magicians?”. Additionally, the channel includes videos covering the topic of religion more broadly rather than just individual religions. These include “What Is Religion?” and “Is Religion Declining?”. Every video strikes me as meticulously researched, and the large backlog is also wonderful to have since the channel is seven years old. You have numerous videos to choose from.

3. Angela’s Symposium

With mostly shorter videos and just the occasional lecture-length segments, this channel is perfect for if you’re in a hurry. It’s mostly devoted to studying magic within religious practices and includes videos on the occult, paganism, hoodoo, and more. Angela’s Symposium also includes topics more loosely tied to magic such as tarot cards. It’s organized into quite a few play lists to help you get started learning including “Shamanism & Indigenous Religions,” “Philosophy & Magic,” and “Sex Magick”. She also conducts interviews.

4. Esoterica

This channel covers exactly what it sounds like — the esoteric. Subjects include philosophy and the occult. A couple video examples are “Possession and Exorcism in Ancient Israel” and “Greek Roman Egyptian Magic”. These are all excellent in-depth resources, and many topics covered span multiple videos.

5. Mythology and Fiction Explained

While it does include occasional videos on literature, the channel mostly covers mythology and folklore. Having just the rare longer video, this channel is one that’s great for if you’re busy. It encompasses many different mythologies such as Egyptian, Greek, Celtic, and Japanese. My favorites are the videos on Christian demonology and angelology. Containing animation throughout, this channel is quite immersive.

6. The Legends of History

Like Mythology and Fiction Explained, this channel draws you in with the artwork that accompanies narrations of mythological tales. It also includes some historical accounts, fairy tales, and legends such as a fascinating video called “Bloody Mary: The Terrifying Ritual”. Their videos on The Testament of Solomon and The Book of Enoch are compelling considering that many people have not heard of these religious writings.

Through these six fantastic YouTube channels, I believe you’ll learn about a wide array of religions. They are thrilling free resources.
