‘Sitting’ with the Difficult Questions.
The Art of Meditation or simply, Mindfulness & Awareness.
I am by no means an expert in meditation. It has repeatedly come up throughout my many trainings and even some college coursework as well.
I grasp the concept; however, theory and practice are very different things. A ‘revelation’ I am sure many of you already know.
Truth is, meditation does not look the same for each person or even with each practice. Every hear of walking meditation or meditation through movement?
It’s a concept I was introduced to during Massage school and it, like meditation in general, came up again in my Herbal Apprenticeship, Rock Tape Training, Yoga Teacher Training and also in Health Coaching Training.
It’s something you might already do but are not fully aware of. Try honing in a bit more throughout the day. As you allow your mind to wander seamlessly, try to just be mindful by bringing your awareness and attention to your thoughts.
Like in business and leadership, observation is an important skill to develop and encourage within yourself as well as your team…
Become the observer of your own life and thoughts.
For example, during a massage session when the client is quiet and there isn’t any need for me to be explaining my work (what I am noticing/finding in their body, or what I am doing and why/how it is going to help, etc.) there is time for my mind to contemplate thoughtfully and/or wander aimlessly.
I always would have Great ideas for life, writing, dinner, etc. and I had the time to figure things out. The trouble was at some point I had so much information in my head that I couldn’t get down before I would lose it — I needed a notebook during my sessions. Many times, conversations start up during these wonderful mind revelations as well, and game over (oftentimes). Sometimes our conversations were also ground breaking. I cannot tell you how many times I would share ideas and things with clients who said I really needed to teach and/or write books — oh man!
Anyway, fast forward from previously to present-day where I am more aware of what was happening and am now more mindful and ‘involved’ with the process while also just observing.
I observe when it feels like an answer strikes like a bolt of lightening — quick and powerful, yet oftentimes also gentle and subtle somehow. Almost as if it could just slip on by unnoticed if I wasn’t paying attention to and honoring my thoughts, my intuition, my soul, the Devine within me — within all of us — providing insight and answers.
Like the bolt of lightening across the night sky, these revelations (large or small, minute even, but oftentimes ground breaking), shed light into the dark corners of our minds. Helping us to make connections, better understand ourselves, our situation, our bodies, the people in our lives, etc., as well as how we feel about _____, find peace, health, God…
Much like our loved ones (fur babies totally included), I believe our bodies and souls crave connection and communication with us. Spend not just time with yourself, but heart-felt mindful quality time.
For me, and perhaps for you too, trying to meditate ‘correctly’ or in the way most people think about as meditation, feels foreign and nearly impossible. Once I noticed I was in meditative-like states throughout the day — you know, you are concentrated yet also just in such a state of being you do not even notice that you have become one (as if you are not separating the many parts of yourself from yourself — like our brains, you just are), I learned that all I needed to adjust was my observation, acknowledging and honoring the process while being careful not to interfere, as best I could anyway.
Hopefully that all comes across well. It’s hard to explain.
If you find yourself needing insight and find it hard to meditate more ‘traditionally’, perhaps stop trying and just go do something seemingly mindless. Here is the important part, pay attention to your thoughts without interjecting or directing them. Sometimes, like a good leader, the best thing you can do is ‘nothing’ — just wait.
Wait for the answer to Strike like a Bolt of Lightening that Lights up the Sky — lights you up.
For some, this ‘mindlessness’ that inspires your intuition to start sparking will come when you exercise, clean the house, work on a project, sit with a cup of tea, listening to music, etc. or a combination. Whatever your process to create the space for inspiration, find it and just be one with yourself and the universe.
I hope this helps you trust in your intuition. I hope it brightens the deepest darkest corners inside of you yearning for a chance to be seen, heard, understood, and likely healed. I hope it helps light you and your soul up like a soft warm and powerful glow that is felt and unable to be vanquished. Blessings and best of luck!
