Sipping Dreams Through a Straw

“Like dreams taken through a straw.” — Tom Waits
Bursting with color like tulips at sunset my dreams sip through a straw. My father visits me to soothe my sadness after his sudden and unexpected departure at 53 — way too young to leave us.
I reach out to caress my father’s freshly shaven face, I see the dimple in his small chin, the twinkle in his blue eyes, the wrinkles of time on his forehead, the receding hairline, after which I awake to sort through my sleeping brain at night… My father’s still smiling.
I am reading Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert and her definition of creativity jumps off the page and sips through my mind like dreams taken through a straw.
I am a big dreamer and make it a point to remember my colorful and numerous dreams that crowd my sleeping brain at night. I am particularly happy when I dream of my father, who died of a sudden heart attack at the young age of 53. I used to play tennis, soccer, volleyball, ping pong, and swim in the Timis River with him as a child and the world was ours. I also used to ride his mini scooter around our neighborhood roundabout in Lugoj, Romania when I was 12 years old. Riding in circles and not going in the street. Those were the days!
Nowadays, dreams of my father still sip through a straw and bring me solace and peace of mind.
How about you? Do you dream of your loved ones in bursting colors? I hope you do!
