I watched the recently released The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as the titular character.

I loved the movie through and through. It’s gothic music, the storytelling and the acting really hit the jackpot.

The whole plot revolves around Riddler and his game of cat and mouse with Batman (Bruce Wayne).

It is later revealed that he grew to dislike Bruce because he considered that Bruce wasn’t a true orphan as he didn’t suffer as Riddler did.

Even though Bruce’s parents died, he still got to live in a big mansion with all the luxuries while Riddler had to stay in the orphanage that was not funded well due to corruption of political leaders and even the police department.

“This is the underlying motivation for Riddler to take revenge on all those who wronged him and that includes Thomas Wayne (The father of Bruce Wayne aka Batman).”

The lesson we can take away from this is that how revenge destroys you from within.

It shows how Riddler hates Bruce Wayne for no fault of Bruce. He didn’t choose the life he was given. Yet Riddler hated him and ended up becoming a maniac obsessed with Bruce.

And not just Riddler, Batman too was driven by “Vengeance” as he often declared.

Only later in the movie does he realise that what happened in the past can’t be changed. He decides to let go and be better.

He doesn’t need to be a symbol of vengeance but a symbol of hope.

The revenge theme of the film particularly resonated with me, because I have been going through something similar for the past 3 years of my life. Being torn apart between two really close people. Where one is trying to extract revenge on the other.

And it isn’t helping anyone one of us.

This quote sums it up perfectly:-

When you begin on the journey of revenge, dig two graves.
