Simplicity Is a Form of Sophistication

Things That Took Me a Decade to Recognize

Photo by Ignacio Brosa on Unsplash

I have a friend Alan who always likes to do trendy things. I have known him for more than 10 years. Life has changed so much in these 10 years. The decade feels like a century.

Alan has been popular in our group of friends from the start. He would like to dine out in the most famous cafés of the city, he was the first to get the new outfit which represented the change in fashion. He was undoubtedly the living example of a young, energetic, city living guy.

Recently, Alan’s popularity has decreased. We don’t have contests on fashion in our group just to get the facts straight but he is no longer the centre of attention. His approach to living an up to date life still continues, he still visits the most talked-about vacation spots, goes to foreign trips with his wife and daughter.

There is another member in my not so big and not so cool circle of close friends. Sam, he was like unnoticeable for the last decade. There was almost nothing worth mentioning about his manner, routine, spending habits. Sam always used to wear clothes that were OK. Took his wife and children to parks. Spend time with them at home. He used to tell us what he did in his leisure time.

Now what has happened over the period is that my not so popular friend Sam has become the new talk of the town. Why? I have been thinking for quite some time. Nothing has changed in his way of life. He hasn’t started wearing the latest trendy clothes nor did he took any recent exotic vacations.

The thing that attracts all of us is Sam’s ability to carry on his simple lifestyle for such a long period. He has always been the same, always wore ordinary clothes. Always had lunch for just the sake of having lunch not to get the satisfaction of having eaten at a popular place. Get things done his own way, not the popular way.

After analyzing the last decade I have concluded. The thing that makes Sam unique is his way of life. He doesn’t have exciting stories to tell us. He doesn’t share the same enthusiasm for gadgets. His kids go to a school where he thinks they are getting a good education not where the society thinks.

His popularity in our group grew gradually and with consistency not due to an event. He always looked satisfied and still is.

My friend Alan, who was the popular one and still is always had his ups and downs. Latest clothes which he wore not always worked best for him but he tried them nonetheless. He couldn’t always afford foreign trips but did manage them somehow.

This kind of lifestyle has taken a toll on him. He looks tired all the time. Nothing seems to cheer him up as it should. Because he is so used to to the fancy things, these things don’t bring any satisfaction to him anymore.

Things I learnt from This

Power of Routine

What I have observed from this is that to earn a long term recognition, it doesn’t matter what your style is, what your views are, what you want to say is, you have to be consistent. There is power in the routine. Routine can be boring I agree, but if you have a simple routine it is easier for you to cheer yourself up by trying anything new. But if your routine is trying everything new, how will you change your routine?

Simplicity is a form of Sophistication

It takes time to get yourself recognized as a brand. The power of simplicity builds up slowly. Unlike the attraction of exuberant and exotic things, simple things start pulling you gradually and meekly until you feel a strong pull towards them.

That’s what has happened with Sam. His simple lifestyle has started pulling all of us. Maybe it was always adorable but until the force of attraction became considerably strong we didn’t feel it.

Look at the bigger picture

All of us in that friend’s circle are in our mid-thirties. Who is now our go-to guy for life advice and healthy food? Sam, not Alan (please don’t tell Alan). We are not so old or at least we don’t consider ourselves old and who has come out as stronger, the wiser person of the two, Sam or Alan? I leave the answer to you. It didn’t take Sam his whole life to make a mark on us. Sure ten years is a considerable time but if you see the bigger picture you will understand.

With still almost half of our lives left to live, who has proved to be more worthy?

How to be Happy

If you live a simple life it is easier for you to change your routine every now and then to cheer you up. Simplicity in itself is a great tool to bring you happiness and you have seen it first-hand with Sam. But it also enables you to jump upper and lower echelons of life very easily. Simplicity is the middle ground.

Recognize your Definition of Simplicity

Everyone has their own ground and definition of simplicity is different for everyone. Find your definition of simplicity and stick to it. Time passes so quickly you have no idea. Few years down the road who knows your simplicity becomes the new sophistication for someone. Someone might start idealizing you, simplicity might even become fashionable.

This way of lifestyle will take you far. The marathon runner runs slower but travels farther. The sprinter covers the distance faster but travels less far. Like a marathon runner simplicity will take you farther but slower. Exotic lifestyle will earn you recognition quicker but you won’t get far with it. Consider life as a marathon, not a sprint.

Chose yourself, you want to be like Sam or Alan?
