Simple Ways That Will Help You Be Happier Now

Happiness is not a destination

If there is one thing that we all are collectively are searching for the answer to, it is how to be happy now.

Most people know that happiness doesn’t exist in external things; we know that a certain salary or a bigger house will only fulfil us temporarily. We know it is not anyone’s job to makes us happy, that we cannot simply rely on the people around us to constantly make us happy. And we know that the happy future we dream about daily can only exist if we start to work on it today.

We know all this, yet we are still deeply unhappy.

We just can’t seem to make our daily lives and present reality happy. Sure life has great days but why can’t this feeling last. Happiness seems like the secret to life that we will never unlock. Something we cannot attain right now.

But how are you supposed to be happy if you never work for it?

Happiness like anything in life requires hard work, effort and persistence. It will not come until we begin to take some steps towards it. We will not be happy until we acknowledge that it is all around. Happiness is not a destination, it is right here in the present and it is time we start seeing it.

Here are some ways you can be happier now.

Look for the Bright Side

One of the worst things any unhappy person wants to hear is to look on the bright side. If it was only that simple.

But the truth is, it really is that simple.

I often think of Dicken’s opening line from A Tale of Two Cities ‘It was the best of time, it was the worst of time.’ I thought a lot about this during my sister's wedding which was one of the best time for our family, yet we all know how chaotic and stressful weddings get, with too many emotions and opinions flying around.

What is supposed to be a good time can easily become the worst experience so it really does come down to your mindset. It is what you choose to focus on.

Now, this doesn’t mean that you are not allowed to ever feel negative. All the negative feelings of anger, grief and sorrow about the difficult things you face are justified and you should allow yourself to feel these emotions.

But there comes a point where you have to take action and change your mindset. It is not easy but it can be done.

Most of the time the things that make us unhappy are really not worth wasting our time and energy on. Why should you be unhappy about insignificant things?

If you feel unhappy about something you have to evaluate how important it is and if it will still matter in a few years. You will quickly realise that most things won’t so why let them affect you?

Looking on the brighter side simply means not focusing on the negative. You don’t have to start thinking about happy things in life just don’t focus on the bad.

When it comes to the more important things in life that make us unhappy, like loss, betrayal or rejection, looking on the brighter side is extremely hard. How do we not focus on the negative can be really hard when we can’t see any solutions?

When you can’t see the bright side you have to try and create it. Talk to people, get support, seek advice and take action. You need to take control for things to change, nothing fixes on its own.

Positive thinking and looking on the brighter side is really important. When we let little things trigger us into negative thinking we quickly fall into a spiral of sadness. Suddenly our life seems like one big problem and everything we have experienced has always been bad. We all know this feeling and we also know that it is not true.

Life is like a coin with two sides and anything it throws your way will always have its positives and negatives. So why not simply choose the positive.

Practise Gratitude

When was the last time you were truly grateful?

The best thing about practising gratitude is that it makes the little things in life seem so beautiful. Gratitude is really the best way to make the present happier.

You don’t have to believe in the law of attraction but it is obvious that when you feel happy about the little things in life they will add up to make life seem abundantly happy.

Happiness will no longer feel like a destination because it will be all around you. You don’t have to wait for it to come because it is already here.

Practising gratitude is different for everyone, some choose to take time out and write it down in a journal. The way I try to practise gratitude is to be fully present in a moment and appreciate it. Not thinking about past regrets or worries about the future but to just be.

It is not always easy but when I can do it I truly being to enjoy the simple things in life. Suddenly rainy days start to have a charm and my meals feel more wholesome and comforting. These little things add up to make the day better.

Balance is Key

Balance really is the key to being happier now.

Too much or too little of something does not work and will not make you happy. Overloading yourself with work or not taking any initiative to achieve your goals both result in being unhappy. Life is not just about work yet it should not be wasted by just dreaming and not doing.

You can apply this to anything. Giving all your time to friends and family leaves no time for yourself but having no time for your loved ones also deprives you of the people who matter most.

Creating a balance especially during these crazy times of lockdown is really important. The spaces where we relaxed and took time off have not become our workspace. People we used to meet daily we haven’t seen or spoken to properly in months. Life is out of balance and we are all feeling it.

To be happier in the present requires you to build a balanced routine. You might think your routine is working well but if it is not balanced it is not serving to make you happy.

Happiness requires work but it really doesn’t have to be hard. Happiness is categorised by the feelings of joy, fulfilment, contentment and satisfaction. When these are not being met you begin to feel miserable. By taking action and practising positive thinking, gratitude, balancing your time you feel happier now.
